38 Weeks Pregnant: Baby EngagedYou are 38 weeks pregnant! By now baby’s head has probably “engaged,” or moved down deep into your pelvis to prepare for birth. Sometimes this is called “lightening,” which you will no doubt find ironic, if not hilarious, as baby’s head presses down toward your cervix and snuggles into your bladder. She’s trying to escape! In most cases, lightening should make breathing a bit easier since baby’s weight has moved downward from your ribcage. If this is not your first child, too bad for you – baby will probably stay elevated and engage only when you actually go into labour. On the other hand, if this is not your first child, chances are that entire labour process will run a bit more quickly than it did the first time around.

This week, your little one is around 6 ½ pounds or bigger and between 19 and 20 inches long. She’s as long as a leek! Or a baby, since plenty of babies are born around 20 inches. Note: this marks the end of the grocery references. Goodbye, old friends. Weight and height averages are tough at this stage as the fetus is getting close to fully mature and factors like genetics, your prenatal nutrition and your weight gain are all coming into play to give you a baby probably somewhere between 7 and 10 pounds. Your health care provider might be able to take a guess at baby’s current weight during one of your weekly exams. She’s honing her breathing skills and opening and closing her fists to practise grasping (your skin and hair mostly) for after she’s born. Another week of just sucking the life out of you.
