Do I Need to Buy a Baby Bath Tub?

With so many baby products out there, you may often wonder if all of them are necessary. I know that some baby products are ones that moms don’t use.

Additionally, I know that some products are ones that most mom’s like you can’t live without. In my eyes, a baby bathtub is one of those products.

Baby Bath Tub

The safety, convenience, and useful nature of a baby bath tub are hard to deny. After all, giving your baby a proper baths requires your hands free and your baby safely supported within reach at all times.

These are all things that a baby bath tub will help you to achieve. And that’s why they are an essential product to me.

Why I Recommend Buying a Baby Bath Tub

Having a relaxing bath with your baby can be a great way to bond, but it’s not always practical. A baby bath tub provides you an easy, day-to-day way to safely bathe your baby.

That’s why baby bath tubs come highly recommended in my book. With a baby bath tub, you can rest your baby safely inside while giving them a proper clean.

At the same time, finding the best baby bath tub for your baby is very important. And achieving this comes down to knowing you and your child’s needs.

Different Types of Baby Bath Tubs

In order to find the best baby bath tub for your child, you need to look at the types of tubs out there. There are a lot of tubs to choose from all with different features and designs.

These features include built-in thermometers, color-changing plugs, scales, a foldable design, and much more.

Baby Bath Tub

Choose Your Ideal Tub Type

Finding the ideal tub that fits your style is most important. Think about which bath tub would suit your lifestyle and needs. Here are some tub styles you might like.

Sink to Bath Converter Tub

These types of tubs can be placed in your bathroom or kitchen sink. Thus turning it into a safe bathing space that doesn’t require you to bend over to bathe your baby.

Many find these types of tubs ideal for bathing newborns.

Stand-Alone Tub

Stand-alone tubs are generally a simple shell design that can be placed anywhere by itself to bathe your baby. These types of baby bath tubs could be oblong or upright in design.

They may even come with added features like a built-in thermometer, scale, or a color-changing plug.

Bath Seat

Though not technically a bathtub, a bath seat might be a great fit. This type of baby-bathing apparatus can be semi-permanently installed into your actual bath tub as a secure bath seat.

Foldable Tub

These baby bath tubs are a new innovation made possible by a wonderful material – silicone. These types of tubs are collapsible and can be stowed away discreetly.

They’re also ideal for traveling and those who prefer to be able to store it away when not in use.

Multi-Use Tub

The kind of baby bath tubs that fall into the multi-use category are diverse. A multi-use is what I’d call a tub that comes with added features like thermometers and scales.

Or a tub that comes with various stage settings that allow the product to adapt to babies’ age.

Newborn vs. Infant Baby Bath Tubs

One of the biggest caveats when buying any baby product is its age suitability. These little ones grow so fast that a wonderful product can become unusable after only a few months.

Baby bath tubs are no different, even if they are the best baby bath tub for your little one. That’s why buying a tub that’s suitable for your baby’s age is vital.

You can easily achieve this by looking at the manufacturer’s recommendations. You also want to check independent reviews to get a clear idea of its downfalls and age suitability.

Baby Bath Tub

The Age Suitability of Various Tubs

That being said, there are three main age groups that tubs are suitable for. These include newborns (0-2 months), infants (2 months – 1 year), and toddlers (1 – 4 years).

I find that sink tubs, unique sink-to-tub converters, and tubs with seat grips or newborn inserts are best for newborns. Whereas, bath seats and regular tubs are better for older infants who want more freedom to move and play.

In both cases, the product should also be safe for babies. This means no small pieces, toxic parts or paints, or dangerous design and manufacturer flaws.

What is a Multi-Stage Tub?

Some parents love the idea of multi-stage tubs that adapt to your newborn as they grow older. Luckily, there are plenty of these types of tubs on the market, as well.

They’re money-savers as well. Plus, they’re an excellent eco option, since you won’t be replacing them as soon. On the flip side, some moms may find that these types of tubs don’t really fit either age stage well.

It’s essential to consider age suitability when purchasing your baby bath tub for your little one.

How to Use a Baby Bath Tub

How you use your baby bath tub depends mainly on the type of tub you choose to buy. Regular tubs won’t need any assembly unless they come with multiple parts.

A sink tub gets securely placed in your sink.

Freestanding tubs get placed on a flat surface where they can’t tip over. Bath seats get installed securely into the bathtub.

Other types of tubs have their own eccentricities, but should always be secure. Place the tub in a convenient, safe, and warm spot.

Make Sure the Surrounding Area is Safe

Additionally, you want to make sure that there’s no danger of anything nearby falling on top of your baby. As babies get older, they tend to reach out and grab nearby objects.

This is why it’s important to ensure there isn’t anything they can grab.

What About the Water Level?

You want to make sure that you do not overfill or underfill the tub. Depending on which of the baby bath tub you chose, the water level will vary.

Ideally, the water level shouldn’t be too low so that your baby gets cold. The water level also shouldn’t go higher than your baby’s chin and ears.

Make sure to rinse your tub afterward with water and dry so it is ready for the next time you use it.

Tips to Bathe Your Baby in a Baby Bath Tub

Giving your child a bath can be a very stressful experience for new moms.

They are small and unable to support themselves to sit. Additionally, some babies don’t enjoy baths and may cry the whole time.

Don’t worry, as you and your child get more experienced with bathtime, this process will become easier.

My Top Ten Baby Bathing Tips

So, here are my top tips to make your bath routine go smoothly:

  • Buy a safe, non-mercury thermometer to measure the water temperature.
  • Make sure your water is between 36°C and 38°C.
  • Choose the best baby bath tub for your specific needs.
  • Gather your baby bath items together beforehand, including, a towel, a change of clothes, soap, and anything else you’ll need.
  • When you put your baby into the water, make sure that their face and ears aren’t submerged.
  • If the water level is too high, scoop out the extra water with a jug.
  • Put a washcloth soaked in warm water over your infant’s chest to keep them warm during the bath.
  • Remember to keep on soaking the washcloth in warm water to ensure it doesn’t get cold.
  • Wash your baby’s face first.
  • Never leave your baby alone while they’re in the water, even if they’re sitting very secure in the bath tub.

How often should I bathe a newborn?

According to this Mayo Clinic Baby Bath Basics Guide, your newborn doesn’t need to have a bath every day.

Instead, they recommend bathing them three times a week. Bathing everyday can dry out their skin.

Plus, exposing their newly severed umbilical stump to the water poses a risk of infection. So a sponge bath is recommended until their umbilical cord falls off.

How often should I bathe an infant over 2 months?

When babies get a bit older, you can bathe them more often and with regular baby bath tubs.
