There are so many inspirational things that can be found in the Bible. There are so many inspirational verses for kids to memorize and, of course, bible verses about being a good father. When life gets tough, I think we rely and should rely on these as much as possible to help us through those harder times in our lives.
Why Should We Look For Verses in The Bible About Being A Good Father?
The Bible is a place we should go to be taught and inspired. Here we learn about what it means to be a father from some of the best men God placed on this Earth, as well as the responsibilities of Fatherhood. Through this, we can love and appreciate these passages of scripture that were placed in the Bible for our day. As we ponder these verses, we can reflect on what it means to be a good Dad and follow in our Father in Heaven’s footsteps.
12 Bible Verses About Being A Good Father
1. Ephesians 6:4
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Through this inspirational verse about fathers, we learn the role of the Father. We learn that it their job to discipline and instruct them with the things the Lord wants them to know, but without causing them to anger.
2. Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Fathers are a key instrument in the lives of their children not only when they are young but as they grow up as well. Kids will make their own decisions and choices (some might not be correct), but they will always understand their choices based on the teachings of their Father. Through the foundation that they learn at a young age, they will be better prepared to make more right choices throughout their life.
3. 1 Timothy 5:8
But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.
While this means different things to different people, let’s break it down. First, it talks about providing for your family. Some may take this very literally and think food, rent, etc. it means part of that but means so much more. It means giving your very best to help provide for your family not only financially but emotionally as well.
We all know that all family lives are different, so providing takes on so many different meanings. I love this scripture, and in fact, it is one of my favorite bible verses about being a good dad because it reminds me that there are so many ways that all dads can be that providing source to their children.
4. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
God is our Father in Heaven. He gave each one of us his most precious gift of all time, his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, his perfect Son. This is a true testament of a loving Father.
As we read this and ponder it, we come to know of the sacrifices we as parents, more specifically Dads, get to make to help their family and to rear them in righteousness.
5. Ephesians 5:25-28
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
There is nothing better a father can do than teach his children than to love his wife. This is what continues to make beautiful families when husbands love their wives with all their hearts, mind, and strength.
6. Ephesians 5:31-33
For this, the cause shall a man leave his Father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife sees that she reverence her husband.
This passage of scripture occurs right after the first, where it talks about how to treat your wife. This continues to remind us that we must leave our Father and our Mother and become one with our wife. As we do this, we are able to learn, grow, and make decisions as a couple. This is one of the most important things to learn that you should cleave to your wife as you leave your parents.
7. Joshua 24:15
And if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
One of the greatest questions we can ponder in the Bible is who we will serve. As a father, who will we serve as our children? Look to us as an example. We want to ensure that when they see us, they know that we are serving the Lord, and as we do this, we teach our children to serve the Lord as well.
8. Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
This goes along with the verse above to be perfect. Of course, we all know that we are not perfect, but we aim to be, and we aim to teach our children to be perfect. Through this, we are then saved by the grace of our Father in Heaven.
9. Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
There are so many great scripture verses in the Bible about the important role the Father plays in the home to lead them. I do always come back to this one, though. I love that it lays out to be strong and have courage and not to fear, for the Lord is with you.
So often, we wish that being a parent came with an instruction manual, we feel like it would be so much easier at times, but this reminds us that he is always with us by our side every single time. As we remember this simple thing, we can be strong and courageous to do the things we need to do in our life and our family’s life.
10. Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
I love this verse because it reminds us of the priorities we should have. Seek first the kingdom of God. So seek to follow God and build your foundation on this. Once this is built and you are righteous, then you shall have all the blessings that God wants to bestow upon you.
11. Luke 15:20
And he arose and came to his Father. But when he was yet a great way off, his Father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
This Bible verse about being a good father, it reminds us to have compassion for our children. The Father saw the Son in the distance and had compassion and ran to him and hugged and kissed him. There is a great deal we can learn from this.
How many times have our kids do something that has disappointed us? If they haven’t yet, there will probably be a time when they will, but what we learn from here is no matter what our kids do, we should have compassion for them and shower them with endless love and welcome them back home.
12. Malachi 4:6
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
A family is about showing love, compassion, and kindness, and being one with another. This reminds us of the importance of family and being one with another and turning our hearts to each other, and showing that love for one another.
