Synopsis from Raincoast Books:

What is Merry Berry’s special fairy gift? What can she share with her friends to brighten their days? This inspiring picture book tells the story of how the Lulabellez Merry Berry earned her fairy wings. What’s the secret ingredient to her success? Cup-cakes! Children will delight in finding out how Merry Berry discovered her delicious hidden talent. Lively illustrations and glitter on the pages make this book one of a kind, sure to be read again and again.

Fairies are a topic that always interest my girls and the sparkly pink cover of What Kind of Fairy Is Merry Berry? had my 4-year old hooked without even knowing what the story was about. The illustrations are fanciful and fun; even the text incorporates curls and swirls obviously inspired by fairies. And the addition of glimmer and sparkles on the actual fairies themselves and the things they transform made those pages magical to my daughter when we read the book.

Although the fairies were a big draw to this book (and all the pink and glitter) the actual story that everyone has a talent that just needs to be awakened is also lovely. This can be important to kids when they feel their friends or siblings can do certain things better than they can. It’s a reminder that we all have a gift, something we love doing. Don’t dwell on what you can’t do but celebrate and share what you love doing. I think that’s a great message for kids and adults.
