Over the Ocean
Chronical Boooks / Raincoast Books
By Taro Gomi
36 pages
age 3-5

Synopsis from Raincoast Books:

In this beautiful testament to wondering, a young girl gazes out to where the water meets the sky and wonders what lies beyond the waves. Boats filled with toys? Skyscrapers filled with people? Houses filled with families? Or, maybe, over the ocean stands someone not so different from the girl herself, returning her gaze.

I first discovered Taro Gomi through Scribbles and I’ve been a fan ever since. Over the Ocean has me reminiscing about our recent family travel to the Caribbean. There’s something awe-inspiring about the ocean and what lays beyond the waves. Over the Ocean illustrates this wonder. The daydreaming girl and her beach remain unchanged as the image in her line of sight change, bringing into view what she imagines lays beyond her reach.

Over the Ocean is a great way to illustrate to kids how the world is more than our backyard, our city, our country. What would lie beyond the nearest ocean you visited?
