When we think of spas one of the first things that come to mind are hotel rooms. Am I right? And when you think about what a hotel bathroom looks like it consists of very little. It’s refreshing to walk into a space that isn’t filled with day to day details of getting ready and rushing out the door. Here are a few ways you can easily achieve that spa-like feel in your own home to help give you some peace and time to yourself.

1. Clear the clutter, clear your mind.

Our bathrooms house everything from make-up to laundry. Make an effort to put it away. A tidy space is much more calming than one that’s messy and your bathroom is no exception. A bathroom should be a place of relaxation, however if you are lounging in your bathtub looking at a pile of clothes that need to be washed that’s going to do the opposite.

2. Take back YOUR bathroom.

That’s right Moms, it’s your bathroom, not your kids. We love them dearly, however a bathroom should be your space to retreat and hideaway when you can. There should be no reason to have kids toys lingering in your space, unless of course you only have one bathroom. If this is the case find a place to store their items so that they can be put away and out of sight.

3. Use pretty containers.

Q-tips, cotton balls, make-up remover pads are all necessities in a bathroom. Why not make them a little prettier with containers that can sit out on your counter rather than hidden in a drawer. Glass apothecary jars work best so you can see what’s inside. Add in a few vintage pieces you might find at an antique store or flea market and you’ve got a grouping of functional, pretty accessories.

4. Lighting.

Your lighting must be on a dimmer switch. A well lit bathroom for applying make-up and getting ready for the day is essential. In the evening when it’s time to relax, dimming the lights is a perfect way to unwind. Another calming source of lighting would be to light candles. It sounds a little old fashioned perhaps, but believe me, it’s a perfect way to relax your eyes and prepare for a good nights rest.

5. Ambience.

Listening to music is another way to provide a spa-like feel. Classical music, ambient or even nature sounds if you so wish can all add to the relaxation time in a bathroom. Fragrance, from an aromatherapy perspective can also add to your experience. Keep it very subtle, however, as too much can have a negative impact. An easy and subtle way to add fragrance is through your bath salts or body moisturizer. The more regularly you use it, you’ll find the room will start to smell that way all the time.

Having a space where you can retreat to and relax is crucial when you’re a Mom. Make it your own and make it special. You’ll thank yourself, not only for clearing the clutter, but for giving yourself a space that makes you feel good and provides added incentives to rest and relax. Enjoy!
