Preparing to go back to school from summer can feel a little overwhelming, especially when we’re still savoring the last popsicle by the pool or clinging to those slower mornings in our pajamas.

But as moms, we know the school bell waits for no one—so it helps to ease into the transition with a little planning (and maybe a lot of coffee).

Whether your little ones are excited to see their friends again or dragging their heels about early wake-ups, we’ve gathered some of our favorite tips to help make the back to school shift smoother, calmer, and dare we say… even a little fun?

Resetting Your Sleep Schedule

Summer bedtime can be a bit of a free-for-all. We’ve all had those “just one more episode” nights or spontaneous evening ice cream runs.

But as back-to-school season creeps closer, it’s time to gently guide our kiddos (and maybe even ourselves!) back to a routine that doesn’t include staying up past 10.

Start Small and Shift Gradually

One of our favorite tricks? Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up time a week or two before school starts.

We like to move it by 15–30 minutes every few days so it doesn’t feel like a total shock to their system. Think of it like a slow dance into structure—less resistance, more yawns.

Make Evenings Calmer and Cozier

We love creating a calm-down routine in the evening: dimmed lights, bath time, reading a book together, and maybe even a little lavender spray on the pillows. This signals to their bodies (and ours) that it’s time to wind down.

Bonus tip: cut screen time at least an hour before bed—we know, easier said than done, but it really helps.

Morning Light = Natural Alarm Clock

Once you start waking them up earlier, open those curtains and let the sunshine in! Natural light helps reset their internal clocks. Some moms swear by a gentle wake-up playlist—yes, even kids can learn to love a soft morning vibe.

Little by little, you’ll notice less morning grumpiness and more well-rested smiles. That’s a back-to-school win we’ll take any day!

Building (and Practicing) a Morning Routine

Ah, school mornings. The rush, the toast flying out of the toaster, and someone always forgetting a shoe (why is it always just one shoe?).

But we’ve learned that having a solid morning routine—one that we actually practice before the big day—makes everything run smoother.

Step 1: Lay It All Out the Night Before

This is hands-down one of our favorite sanity savers. Pick the next day’s outfit and lay it out, yes, even the socks and hair accessories.

Have bags packed, lunchboxes prepped, and water bottles filled. We like using a “launch pad” (aka a basket or a spot near the door) where everything lives until it’s go-time.

Step 2: Wake Up Before the Chaos (If You Can)

We know how precious every minute of sleep is, but giving yourself even 10–15 minutes alone before waking up the kids can be a game changer. A few sips of coffee in peace? Bliss.

Step 3: Keep Breakfast Simple but Fun

We’re all about breakfast that fuels the day but doesn’t take forever. Think: yogurt and granola, mini pancakes with fruit, or egg muffins you prepped on Sunday. One of our go-to’s? A build-your-own toast bar. It’s fast and the kids feel like little chefs.

Step 4: Make It a Game or Routine Chart

You can turn mornings into a fun checklist or race (without the stress!). Our favorite part? Letting the kids check off steps like “brush teeth” or “get dressed”—it gives them a sense of independence, and let’s be honest, it helps us keep our sanity too.

Practice this routine a few days before school starts, and mornings might just become your new favorite part of the day (okay, maybe second to bedtime ).

Setting Academic and Personal Goals

As moms, we know our kids thrive when they have something to work toward—even if it’s as simple as “read 3 books this month” or “pack my own lunch twice a week.”

Helping them set a few clear goals at the start of the school year is one of our favorite ways to build confidence and motivation (and hey, it works for us too!).

Make Goals SMART (And Fun!)

We love the SMART goal method because it gives goals structure without being too complicated. SMART stands for:

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

So instead of “Do better in math,” try: “Complete all math homework on time for the next 4 weeks.” It’s clearer and gives your child a way to actually see progress.

Let your kids get involved by picking one academic goal and one personal goal to start. Academic goals can be things like improving handwriting, reading 10 minutes a day, or raising a test score. Personal goals could be organizing their backpack daily or being kind to 3 classmates each week.

Track Progress With Visuals

We’re big fans of goal charts, sticker boards, or even simple habit trackers taped to the fridge. One of our favorite ideas? A “goal jar” where your child drops in a marble or pom-pom each time they meet a mini goal. When it fills up, they earn a little reward (hello, Friday movie night!).

It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. When kids see their small wins stack up, they’re way more likely to keep going. And honestly? So are we.

Creating a Distraction-Free Homework Station

If there’s one thing we’ve learned as moms, it’s that homework time goes way smoother when our kids have their own little “focus zone.”

Creating a distraction-free homework station doesn’t have to mean a total room makeover—it just needs to be a cozy, organized space where everything has a place (and distractions stay out!).

Pick a Spot That Feels Calm

We like setting up homework stations in a quiet corner of the house—ideally away from TVs, loud siblings, or busy walkways.

It can be a small desk, a table nook, or even a converted closet space (yes, we’ve seen some amazing “cloffices” for kids!). The goal is simple: somewhere that signals, “It’s time to focus.”

Keep Supplies Handy (But Not Overwhelming)

Our favorite homework stations have just the essentials—pencils, paper, erasers, scissors, and maybe a calculator or timer. We love using a caddy, small drawer unit, or desktop organizer so your child isn’t always running around asking, “Mom, where’s the glue stick?!”

Bonus points if you let them pick out a few fun supplies—new notebooks, colorful pens, or a motivational sign. A little ownership goes a long way!

Add Inspiring Touches (and No Screens!)

We like to add a cozy lamp, a fun chair cushion, or even a whiteboard for notes and reminders. If your child has a device for school, try keeping it in airplane mode or using apps that block distractions during homework time.

When their space feels calm and purposeful, even the trickiest assignments seem a bit more manageable. And hey, if it helps cut down on homework meltdowns? We’re all in.

Preparing To Go Back To School From Summer: You’ve Got This! Let’s Make It a Great School Year

We know getting back into the school groove can feel like a lot. New schedules, packed lunches, forms to sign, and maybe a few first-day jitters (for both kids and moms!). But take a deep breath—you’ve got this, and so do your amazing kiddos.

Progress, Not Perfection

Let’s remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. Some mornings will feel like a sprint. Some evenings will be pure chaos. And that’s okay. What matters most is that we’re showing up, encouraging our kids, and cheering them on, one school day at a time.

We like to focus on progress, not perfection, and remind ourselves that we’re building habits, not just checking boxes.

A Little Encouragement Goes a Long Way

We love starting the day with a little boost, whether it’s a sweet lunchbox note, a high-five out the door, or a quote that makes you smile before the chaos begins.

(Psst… if you need a little inspiration, we’ve put together some of our favorite back-to-school quotes – perfect for printing, posting, or just keeping in your heart.)

Let’s head into this school year with confidence, kindness, and a sense of humor. Because whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading into high school, one thing’s for sure: they’ve got the best cheerleader right by their side, you.

Here’s to early mornings, growing minds, and lots of proud moments ahead. We’ve got this, mamas. Let’s make it a year to remember!
