10 Successful Breastfeeding Tips for Working Moms

Here are some of our go-to tips that can make breastfeeding while working feel a whole lot more manageable (and less stressful).

1. Start Building a Freezer Stash Early

We love starting to pump once a day a couple of weeks before heading back to work. It builds your stash slowly but surely—and it’s a huge confidence boost! Try expressing just a small amount each day instead of full feeds. Even collecting around 20 mL daily can add up to a couple of full bottles in a week or two.

We also like storing milk in smaller portions (think 50–100 mL) so your baby’s caregiver can adjust how much they offer per feed. If your little one needs more, they can just warm up another small bag—no wasted milk, no stress.

2. Invest in a High-Quality Pump

This is one of those must-haves. A good, efficient pump (we’re talking hospital grade or a really well-reviewed portable one!) makes all the difference in saving time and keeping up your supply.

3. Get Familiar with Your Rights at Work

Before returning, check your company’s policies and the breastfeeding laws in your area. Most places require break time and a private (non-bathroom!) space for pumping. Knowing your rights = less stress.

4. Set Up a Pumping Schedule (and Protect It!)

We like adding pumping times to our calendar just like meetings. It helps us stay consistent, and it lets coworkers know it’s a non-negotiable part of the day.

5. Have a Dedicated Pump Bag

Keep a separate bag with your pump, extra parts, milk storage bags, a cooler, and some cleaning wipes. It’s our secret weapon for staying organized and not forgetting something crucial!

6. Practice Pumping Before You Go Back

Try doing a few full pump-and-store sessions before your first day back. It helps with confidence and lets you figure out how long you’ll need during actual work breaks.

7. Communicate With Your Employer

We always suggest a quick, friendly chat with your manager before your return. Let them know your pumping needs—clear communication goes a long way!

8. Dress for Pumping Success

We’re big fans of nursing-friendly tops, zip-down dresses, or pumping bras. Trust us—easy access means fewer struggles in cramped rooms or on busy days.

9. Stay Hydrated and Well-Nourished

It sounds simple, but water and snacks really do help maintain your milk supply. We like keeping a water bottle and granola bars in our pump bag (because #mombrain).

10. Give Yourself Grace

This might be the most important one. Some days won’t go perfectly—and that’s okay. You’re doing something amazing, mama. Be proud of yourself, every step of the way.
