We often find ourselves passing through Detroit, Michigan, en-route to another destination. With the opening of Third Man Record’s Cass Corridor location we thought it was the perfect reason to stop and make a day trip in Motor City.

You may think that a record store doesn’t make an ideal family stop but as we have raised our kids with a love of music, it was a perfect quick destination. We have previously visited their Nashville location but Cass Corridor has a functioning record press which is too cool not to see in person.

We found ourselves driving past a few sparse neighbourhoods to get to the small up and coming spot with repurposed factory spaces, lofts and small eclectic shops. As the street is actually quite short with a few new shops dotting either side, we almost missed our destination. I find this seems to be our overall experience with Detroit as a whole, rundown and ignored areas with a revitalized pockets here and there. We were lucky to snag some street parking right in front of the store but there is a public lot just down the street.

Interactive Fun at Third Man Records Cass Corridor

Up front is the record store carrying LP and singles for bands produced by or recorded at Third Man Records. You’ll also find unique recordings like This Record Belongs To You. I picked this up on a whim but it’s one of our favourite albums. I love that book that comes with it talking about playing records on turntables (especially since we know the folks at Acoustic Audio and the equipment they sell).

You’ll also find other Third Man Records paraphernalia like guitar picks, stickers, T-shirts and a deck of cards to name a few. Further to the back of the store you’ll find a small stage for intimate concert events.

The store also has some great interactive fun like the record recording booth (you can record your own single). We loved the photo booth for the Poloroid like photos and Third Man Records yellow treatment. I convinced the kids to get a group shot and it’s one of my favourites that sits on our piano. My son added to his blow mold collection with the Third Man Records truck (he has a guitar from their Nashville location).

Down the back hallway you’ll find yourself in front of the working record press facilities. I’ve heard they sometimes run tours of the press but that wasn’t the case when we arrived. The large window enables us to see the various stations as the limited staff ran a number of pressings (posted up on the wall).

Video Tour of Third Man Records Cass Corridor

You can take a quick tour from our visit of Third Man Records Cass Corridor location in this short video below:

Don’t forget to stop next door at the Jolly Pumpkin for fresh made pizza and specialty sandwiches. Parents will love the array of local craft beer on tap. The space is so open and fun with communal tables and seating at the bar. There’s also a small patio out front if you’re more into people watching on a nice day.
