With school started and work commitments building up, it can be hard to getaway but Chicago offers a perfect weekend escape. The challenge for us being a family of five is finding accommodations to meet our large family needs. Hyatt Place in Chicago’s River North is a perfect option.

We have tried adjoining rooms when traveling, like visiting Washington, D.C. but that can get pricey if done for all of your trips. Family suites are a great option, like our room in Chicago at the Hyatt Place River North.

SPACE FOR LARGER FAMILIES

The room offered us two queen sized beds but a seating area with a pullout sleeper sofa, perfect for a family of five. I especially love the L-shaped sleeper sofa in the sitting area as it gave more hanging out room for the kids.

You can see my room tour in the video below:

LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION

When you travel to Chicago, whether you’re an urban family like us or just want to enjoy the urban experience, I love the location of the Hyatt Place in Chicago’s River North district. There was so much around us to visit, including the L-train, restaurants and our favourite tiki bar, Three Dots and a Dash.

We loved roaming the streets, visiting the Magnificent Mile (home of the large American Girl store and café), the Navy Pier, Millennium Park and the Bean, and the Riverwalk. Although the Hyatt Place offers both valet and self park options with in/out privileges, so much was available to us by foot.

FREE WIFI

With three of five family members digitally connected, free WIFI has moved from a nice perk to a necessity during a holiday getaway. You have to register to receive it.

FREE BREAKFAST

Even if you only need a cup of coffee to start your day, kids often need a little more sustenance to avoid cranky behaviour, especially if you plan on walking about the city. The free continental breakfast definitely is a plus in the benefit column for the Hyatt Place.

You can enjoy cereal, bakery items, juice, fruit, and hot breakfast items including oatmeal, a favourite morning starter for me. When you check-in you’re given vouchers for the morning breakfast which staff take at the entrance to the EMA café right off of the lobby area.

I loved the café setting of both the buffet area and the seating. It really elevated the continental breakfast experience we have enjoyed in other hotels on our travel. They had a tea and coffee section set-up in the bar if that’s all you required too.

Two things we look for in a hotel when traveling that the Hyatt Place in Chicago’s River North didn’t offer:

  • In-room safes. We love having a secure place to keep our travel documents and other important items so we can enjoy our vacation without worry. This was missed in Chicago
  • Swimming pool. Like WIFI, now that my kids are older a swimming pool is almost a hotel staple when traveling. To be fair, we were so busy on our weekend getaway that the pool wasn’t missed too much but I’m sure the kids would have loved a swim to round out their day.

The Hyatt Place Chicago River North’s location and amenities make this a hotel we would definitely plan for a future Chicago visit, something I hope will be sooner rather than later.
