“Out of sight, out of mind” is a phrase I often hear. But, few baby products meet this description as much as baby humidifiers do.
That’s ok; infant humidifiers are an often overlooked item for nurseries. At least, until your child gets a cold and your doctor or nurse advises you to get one.
Humidifiers can help ease congestion, asthma, colds, and flu. Additionally, they moisten the air, thus avoiding painful cracked lips and nasal passages during winters and dry seasons.

Buyer’s Guide to The Best Baby Humidifier
What to Expect in This Buyer’s Guide:
- Do I Need to Buy a Humidifier?
- The Different Types of Humidifiers
- Are Humidifiers Suitable For Babies?
- How to Use a Humidifier Safely
- Tips to Buy The Best Humidifier for your baby
In this buyer’s guide, I’ll go over various topics related to buying a baby humidifier. I’ll discuss the necessity, types, suitability, and usage of them.
Do I Need to Buy a Humidifier?
I know, I know, the list of baby essentials keeps getting longer, but some items are worth their weight in gold. As much as humidifiers get overlooked, they’re one of these items, in my opinion.
They have many uses which benefit your child’s health, and provide comfort, as well. Much like you comfort your child when they’re ill so do humidifiers.
A humidifier will definitely help sick children to breathe and sleep easy. And that’s one of the main reasons parents buy one.
Who Needs a Baby Humidifier?
There are some folks who definitely need to invest in a humidifier
- Those who suffer from asthma.
- If you live at high altitude or in an arid climate
- Who love to turn the heater up at night or during the winter
Though these dry conditions may be manageable for adults, babies find it harder to cope. You see, their airways and nasal passages aren’t as wide.
The Dangers of Dry Air
According to WebMD, these dry environments dry out the mucus in your nasal passages. When this happens to your family or your child, their nasal passages may get cracked and bleed.
But, this dryness doesn’t just cause cracks and bleeding. When the nasal mucus is dried out, it leaves your child more susceptible to viruses and bacteria.
Humidifiers can help to avoid the dangers of dry air and climates. This is why I highly recommend buying one for your dry, heated, or high altitude households.
Plus, a humidifier is a multi-use item that’ll benefit the whole household, not just your baby. If any adults in the house get sick, they can use it too!
Different Types of Humidifiers
Now that you’ve decided to go ahead and get a humidifier, you’re probably wondering which is the best humidifier for your baby.
There are plenty of types of humidifiers on the market. Furthermore, each product comes with a different set of features.
Below I will go through the basic types of humidifiers. Please bear in mind that humidifiers aren’t just a baby product, so not all of them come in cute designs.
Most humidifiers are designed for offices, homes, and general household use by adults.
Cool & Warm Mist Humidifiers
When you’re reading a humidifier product description, the terms “warm mist” and “cool mist” may catch your eye. As confusing as these terms might be, the explanation is fairly simple.
Cool mist humidifiers send out a cool mist. On the other hand, warm mist humidifiers send out a heated or steamy mist.
The purpose of both humidifiers is much the same. Except that a warm mist humidifier gets promoted as more sanitary. The steam kills germs in the water prior to vaporizing it.
Some humidifiers may even have both options – a cool and warm mist function. On the downside, warm mist humidifiers can cause steam burns and should be kept out of reach.
Ultrasonic vs. Evaporative Humidifiers
There are two main types of humidifiers – ultrasonic and evaporative. Ultrasonic humidifiers use high-frequency vibrations to turn water into mist and usually come in countertop designs.
Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to blow out water vapor into the air through a wet wick filter. These types usually come in console designs, are much noisier than countertop versions, and are more expensive, too.
Countertop Humidifiers
Countertop humidifiers are portable, lightweight humidifiers that you can place on any flat surface. For this post, I’ve only included these types of humidifiers.
They’re ideal for home and nursery use and, therefore, the best humidifier for a baby, in my opinion. Plus, you can move them around as your baby grows up or moves around the house.
Console Humidifiers
Console humidifiers are also portable, but not as easily moved thanks to their larger size. They’re ideal for use in large homes, but they’re usually more expensive.
Due to their larger tanks, they’re able to go longer without a refill. Some console humidifiers even look like a piece of furniture.
Consider buying one if you want to use a humidifier in a very large home or open-plan house. I wouldn’t recommend these types for a nursery because they are noisier than countertop versions, though.
In-Duct Humidifiers
This is the least portable option, and, much like in-duct air conditioning, the most expensive. If you’re lucky, you might already have a unit installed in your home.
If not, you’d have to get it installed on your furnace, if you have one. There are three main types of in-duct humidifiers – flow-through, reservoir, and steam.
If you’re interested in one of these, you can find more information. For the purposes of this post, I won’t cover these products.
Are Humidifiers Suitable For Babies?
The simple answer to this question is yes. In terms of your child actually playing with this item like a toy, the answer is a definite no.
Using a humidifier to humidify the air is the main objective, even though your baby is likely to be fascinated by it. Otherwise, humidifiers should get away from curious hands.
This is especially true if your humidifier is a warm mist type. You don’t want your child to get a steam burn.
Additionally, be sure to buy a humidifier that is new, in warranty, safe, and without faults. Furthermore, don’t forget to switch it off, refill it, and supervise your child around it.
How to Use a Humidifier Safely
Using any type of electrical appliance comes with risks. This is especially true if you’re using these appliances around your child or baby.
Luckily, all these useful appliances come with instructions and safety features. You can read all about these in the humidifier’s manual, so be sure to check the instruction manual for more info.
That being said, there are some important safety tips that you should follow with most humidifier products.
I’ve detailed these below to ensure you get the best out of your baby humidifier. Furthermore, so that you use it safely and avoid any mishaps in the process.
Always Use Distilled Water
When you use impure water in your humidifier, it will vaporize whatever particles are in there, too. These include viruses and bacteria particles, as well as white dust, which is dangerous.
This is especially true with ultrasonic humidifiers that vaporize these particles along with the water. So, be sure to use distilled water in your humidifier each and every time.
Additionally, you shouldn’t use unsafe chemicals to clean your humidifier, either. You want to breathe clean, humidified air that is safe as well as sanitary.
Sanitize Your Baby Humidifier Regularly
There’s no use using distilled water if your humidifier is dirty. Not even the best humidifier for a baby is safe if it’s dirty, so be sure to clean it regularly.
If you don’t clean it regularly, it will become a breeding ground for unwanted growth and residue. That’s because bacteria, mold, fungi, and mildew thrive in damp and humid environments like a humidifier tank.
Change The Filter Regularly
If your humidifier has a filter, you need to keep a tab on how old it is. change it regularly to avoid nasty surprises and unsanitary air.
Evaporative humidifiers use a wick filter, which needs regular changes. But, there are ultrasonic humidifiers that may use a filter, as well.
Keep Your Humidifier Out of Reach
As moms, we’re always busy. But don’t let distractions allow you to leave your child alone with the humidifier within reach.
Instead, put the humidifier safely out of their reach to avoid mishaps. If you have pets that can get to the humidifier, like cats, keep it away from them, too.
Even the best humidifier for your baby can fall over if left somewhere unstable or knocked over. Ideally, you don’t want that, so be sure to place it somewhere safe.
Indoor Only
Humidifiers are designed for indoor use only. Not only will it be ineffective outdoors, but it may get exposed to the elements in ways that it shouldn’t.
Water And Electricity
Don’t plug your humidifier in with wet hands, and be sure to place it on a flat, non-metallic surface. This ensures that the unit is grounded, and won’t cause you any electric shocks.
Cool Water Only
Don’t fill your humidifier with hot or warm water. Humidifiers are designed to take cool water, even warm mist humidifiers.
Read And Follow the Instructions
My safety tips may help you, but the manual that comes with the unit is the most important safety guide.
