It’s the First Day of School Already?

Perhaps it is because of the late start to summer or maybe it’s because we’ve been busy with travel and renovations but it seems like this summer has been one of the shortest so far. It’s no wonder the first day of school has snuck up on me.

Sure both of those factors play a part in my bleary-eyed march into the first day of school but I have to take some responsibility. I am not the most organized person when it comes to these big transition dates. At work I’m cool and have it together but home? Just ask my husband. Things can be pretty chaotic. Perhaps I need to get the kids involved.

Thankfully Target Canada helped us with a few school supplies so my kids didn’t enter class completely empty handed. We’ve always lucked out and picked-up our school uniform pieces early.

I’m not a fan of uniforms but it sure makes back to school shopping fast. Are we the only family that makes it through just one year with new uniforms? Ripped knees and stains that never come out of white shirts usually leads to very few hand-me-downs. Consignment shopping is certainly one way to save on clothing costs and means your kids probably won’t be wearing the same shirt as six other kids in the school.

Even with these vegetarian school lunch ideas or these homemade pizza options nothing fancy ended up in our lunch bags. Can you say leftovers from last night’s takeout? If I was more organized I would have remembered these 25 healthy snack ideas or even this list of peanut-free snack options.

I did manage to grab a photo of the kids before our walk to school but believe me this wasn’t any fancy pinterest printout, just a pair of scissors and printer paper and a slightly blurred image. So it wasn’t a picture perfect first day of school moment but I have to remind myself it’s not about me. The kids were excited about seeing their friends and finding their teacher.

I guess this is the perfect time to brush up on managing kids’ after school activities and building homework habits. Maybe one of these creative homework spaces will inspire me.

Here’s hoping your first day of school went well, without too much stress and very few tears. Remember it’s just one day out of entire school year and each day is a fresh start.

Happy first day of school!
