The time has finally arrived. Your kids are off at college or out of your home completely, and you are ready to make some much-needed renovations to your home. You’re likely to be filled with excitement and ready to get started as soon as possible. Before you get started, keep reading to learn a few tips to make your home renovation a bit easier!

Make a Plan

Keep in mind that a home renovation does not have to be a huge task. Something as easy as changing the paint in a room can do wonders. So, the first step to fixing up your home is to make a plan. Sit down with your partner and figure out what you both want to fix up in your home. You can determine if you want to do minor or major renovations, set a budget and make a list of the materials you’ll need to pick up prior beginning the project. Making a checklist can make this process even easier. Remember, being prepared is key!

Minor Updates Can Make a Big Difference

Like we mentioned, paint alone can change the entire feel of a room. But paint is not the only simple way to update your home.

Countertops

New countertops have the same ability that paint does to transform a room. If you have old or outdated countertops in your kitchen, use this opportunity to upgrade to a new color, pattern or finish.

Remember to match what is already in your kitchen, including the cabinets. Unless of course, you want to redo those too! The sky’s the limit once you get the motivation to get started!

Lighting

New lighting is a great way to update any room in your house. Whether it is installing a ceiling fan in your main living space or new vanity lights in your bathroom, this update is sure to upgrade the look of your home.

Even simple changes, like upgrading light fixtures, can really elevate a room.

Hardware

You may not think about the handles on your drawers or dressers often, but taking the easy step of updating these items has the potential to change the look of the room. Whether you simply refinish them or purchase new ones, you can feel great knowing they are new and improved!

Major Updates

If you are ready to make some major renovations to your home, keep reading.

Flooring

Do you still have an ugly plush carpet from years and years ago? Unfortunately, a lot of people do! Use this newfound free time as an opportunity to do some floor refinishing. This will take a little more work than some of the other items mentioned in this list, but your floors will look brand new by the time you are finished!

Screened-In Porch

If you have a porch off the side of your house, then you are set to make a screened in porch. There are many benefits to having a screened-in porch, including keeping the bugs out, having a safe play area for kids and adding value to your home. Additionally, you will have the perfect outdoor space to enjoy a meal without having to worry about bugs!

Screening in your porch can add tremendous value to your home.

Room Conversion

If your kids have moved out (for good), then you may have one or more extra rooms on your hands. Whether you choose to make their room into a home office, new guest room or a craft room, you could use this time to do these renovations. Just make a plan and get to work! (And maybe don’t tell your kids what you are up to!)

Regardless of the project you are starting, it is always important to make a plan and a list of materials you will need prior to starting. Then let your creativity run wild as you choose whether you will take on a big or small project.
