As kids count, they poke each bubble causing a popping sound. My five-year old loved this book. The bubbles and sturdy boardbook style pages are pretty durable too, allowing for a lot of popping (which your kids will want to do). Each page has the number writen in numeric form so even without reading the story kids can count the monkeys with each finger push. As for noise level, it depends how bothered you are when you kids play with bubble wrap. The sound is about the same. The book
