Mix It Up!
Chronicle Books Books/Raincoast Books
age 3-5
By Hervé Tullet
56 pages

Synopsis from Raincoast Books:

Accept Hervé Tullet’s irresistible invitation to mix it up in a dazzling adventure of whimsy and wonder. Follow the artist’s simple instructions, and suddenly colors appear, mix, splatter, and vanish in a world powered only by the reader’s imagination.

I remember first discovering Hervé Tullet when I reviewed his book Press Here for No Time for Flashcards. Mix It Up! offers the same hands-on fun and learning. It’s true, there are a whole assortment of interactive apps available for kids. Hervé Tullet calls upon a child imagination while still getting them interacting with the book. You can’t help but play along with his invitations to rub colours, close pages, and even place your hand flat on an image. Then flip the page and see the results of your action.

Of course we know and most kids may know that they didn’t physically mix the colours or create the paint splatter that appears on the spread before them but that doesn’t take away from their hands-on exploration. That’s what I love about this book. By pretending to add white to a pink to see a lighter version of the colour or rubbing a little blue onto a yellow spot to discover it makes green, kids are bound to retain more colour mixing knowledge than just reading about the colour combinations.

The layout of Mix It Up! is simple, like a child’s artwork focusing on the colour and including small text at the bottom. Some pages my daughter went through without reading the text but still gaining the knowledge. A great concept book on colours and a refreshing treat on interactivity.

Toronto Event:
On October 8 at 4 pm Tullet will lead a hands-on art event with children at The Great Hall, 1087 Queen Street West, and on October 9, 2 pm, he will be drop by Type, 883 QueenSt W, to sign copies of his new book, Mix It Up!.
