The Detective Dog
Pan Macmillan / Publishers Group Canada
By Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Sara Ogilvie
32 pages
age 5 to 8

Synopsis from Publishers Group Canada:

Peter’s dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Whether it’s finding a lost shoe or discovering who did a poo on the new gravel path, her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work. But Nell has other talents too. Every Monday she goes to school with Peter and listens to children read. So who better to have on hand when they arrive one morning to discover that the school’s books have all disappeared! Who could have taken them? And why? There’s only one dog for the job … and Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit!

If you own a dog, you know they have a talent for finding things (sometimes things you don’t want them to find). Nell from The Detective Dog(affiliate link) has this gift. The gift of finding lost things. The rhyme punctuated with little vignettes illustrate Nell’s detective ability at home as well as when her biggest challenge occurs.

Kids will love following Nell around as she finds a lost ball or shoe. They’ll also enjoy being on the trail of the book thief, heading through town, pass the city zoo, and into the woods. The Detective Dog is a fun read for little dog lovers as well as book lovers.
