Never Have I Ever: A Basic Definition

Never Have I Ever A Basic Definition

For those who may not yet be in the know or have never encountered the game, Never Have I Ever is a simple game that brings a heck of a good time. Here are the basics:

  • It’s a game played by two or more people
  • A list of questions will be prepared beforehand to be asked during the game
  • The first player begins by asking the first question to the group. For all Never Have I Ever questions, everyone answers each time. Those who have done what was said in the question have to do the consequence (eat a candy, hold up a finger, take a drink)
  • Each player takes turns asking a question — but all players answer every time.
  • Get the revelations going and have fun!

REMEMBER: Never Have I Ever can lead to some exciting confessions and maybe even big revelations.

Before you start playing, agree with the group that whatever has been revealed stays within the group. Build that safe space so that people will feel comfortable sharing.

Trust is important, so honor that and then just go crazy!

How To Play: A Step-By-Step Refresher

How To Play A Step-By-Step Refresher

We’re all probably already familiar with the game and might even have played it already!

But whether this is the first time playing or you need a refresher, here’s easy-to-follow step-by-step gameplay that we’ve prepared for you:

5 Simple Rules For Never Have I Ever

  1. Gather everyone to sit together in a circle and hand out ten pieces of candy to each player.
  2. Choose which player will start. The first player reads from the list and begins with the first Never Have I Ever question.
  3. Any players who have already done that thing will do the consequence (eat candy, sip from their drink, etc.)
  4. The game then proceeds with the next player in the circle asking the next Never Have I Ever statement.
  5. The player who first finishes their candy (or their drink, holds up all their fingers, etc.) wins the round! Rinse and repeat as desired.

Some Twists To The Game

Some Twists To The Game

Now that the basic idea and rules have been laid out, you can explore the different ways you can tweak the game according to your preferences! Here are some examples of what you can do:

  • “No Candy” Version

No candy in the house? No problem! If there’s not enough candy at hand, so each player has ten pieces, you can always swap it out for whatever is in your pantry. Some candy substitutions that will do the trick:

  • Pringles chips
  • Potato chips
  • Marshmallow
  • Crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Pretzels
  • Dried Fruit
  • Chocolate chips
  • Nuts

This can also work for drinks instead of candy – non-alcoholic if the group is under 18.

You can also opt for snacks or food that many may find less than savory or disgusting! In this game version, the one with the most pieces remaining at the end will win!

  • “Ten Fingers” Version

If you and your peers are not in the mood to snack much, you can opt to use your fingers to keep score.

In this version, players will all hold their hands up, showing all ten fingers. Each time someone admits to doing what was asked, the player (or players) will put down one finger instead of eating a piece of candy.

The player whose ten fingers are all down first will win. Simple, yet it works!

  • “No Takers” Version

In this game version, the consequence will be a penalty for the one who asked the question.

If it is your turn and you ask a Never Have I Ever question that no one else in the group has done before, then you (the one who asked) will be penalized. The consequence will be up to the group to decide before starting the game. Some examples include:

  • Reading out more questions until there are finally takers in the group
  • Having to eat an extra piece of candy or snack
  • Losing the game

Don’t fret, though, because if you choose the third option – losing – that can just signal that once this happens, it’s time to refresh and restart the game!
