Spring Walk
By Virginia Brimhall Snow
age 4-8
32 pages

Synopsis from Raincoast Books:

After a long winter’s sleep, the soil is springing to life. Spring flowers break through the ground to welcome warmer days. Come with Grammy and her grandchildren as they explore and learn all about 24 different flowers. Once home, she teaches them how to plant their own flowers from seeds and make beautiful bouquets.

We think of animals hibernating in the winter months but nature is also asleep, waiting until spring to wake again. A scavenger hunt is the perfect way to rediscover the new plants that are starting to appear. Spring Walk takes you through the various flowers you may see in your neighbourhood or local park. The colourful illustrations will make it easier to flower spotting and plus you’ll find a few crafts and flower facts at the end of the book.

A Nest Is Noisy
By Dianna Hutts Aston, illustrated by Sylvia Long
age 5-8
40 pages

Synopsis from Raincoast Books:

From tiny bee hummingbird nests to orangutan nests high in the rainforest canopy, an incredible variety of nests are showcased here in all their splendor. Poetic in voice and elegant in design, this carefully researched book introduces children to a captivating array of nest facts and will spark the imaginations of children whether in a classroom reading circle or on a parent’s lap

This winter with the trees bare of leaves we’ve noticed a number of nests in our neighbourhood trees, abandoned and quiet. Spring brings with it new life. We always think of nests as something dominated by birds but A Nest is Noisy illustrates that other animals raise families in nests too. A great way to explore the immerging nature around us.

  1. DD really liked ‘The Book with No Pictures’ when we read it recently. We have been reading a lot of ‘fractured’ fairy tales lately too as they have also been reading them at school.

  2. Oh, this looks like a gorgeous selection of books. We came home from a spring walk and read Our Woodland Birds by Matt Sewell. Beautiful book.
