Who doesn’t love receiving mail especially when it’s not a bill or fast food flyer? Just this past summer we started a letter writing program at home in the hopes of receiving replies from afar. A subscription for kids, like OWL Magazine, is also a fun way to expose your child to the anticipation of mail delivery.
Owl has been around since 1976, entertaining and enlightening kids age 9 to 13 but a lot has changed and OWL is evolving too. In September OWL Magazine relaunched with a new look and new editorial content built around the STEAM movement (a new approach to learning, using science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics to educate children.)

besides going to the library to pick out books my daughter loves to read more on her own using her e book reader.
Sometimes technology and kids are painted in a negative light Silvia but anything that encourages kids to read can’t be bad. I think that’s great that you’re daughter is using an ereader for her own book enjoyment. Now so many libraries even allow for downloading digital books. Such a cool idea.
We read together and visit the library weekly. I let them pick whatever they want to read.
My kids read on their own Jeannie but I still love reading books with them at night.

I have started reading to my kids every night since they were very young, and I still do. We love to go to the library.

My kids have always enjoyed reading. I encourage my kids to read by having lots of books. We have our own mini library with lots of books to read and if they can’t find anything to read at home. They have library cards and they go to the library.
We visit the book store at east once a month and the kids an pick out a few books of their choosing to read through the next month. They really like getting to pick books that interest them.
We go to the library every week, so they could pick out the books that they want to read.
Library visits are fun Jennifer and I agree, the kids love choosing their books to read for the week.
We do weekly library trips with my 4 year old and let him choose any 3 books he wants. He loves it!
My daughter got a kobo mini, that really helped, but she loves paper books and has always had a passion for reading. We give her 30 mins of reading time every night before bed, at 8, I’m still pretty happy she will opt for a paper book over her kobo most nights.
We love technology in our house too Darlene though they haven’t done much with it for digital reading. I like the turn the page books too. Great way to incorporate reading, as part of your bedtime routine.
I love this. My daughters enjoy receiving mail, which is why I always add a good age-appropriate magazine to their holiday wish lists. They’re thrilled each and every month — truly the gift that keeps on giving. We will certainly add Owl to our next one! 🙂
Subscriptions are a great gift idea Gina and a nice way to continue the love of reading all year round.
Both of my kids have always loved books. My daughter just got her own library card last week and she loved the whole experience. I am just starting to homeschool her and reading is high on our priority list. We read outside whenever it’s good weather.
That first library card is an amazing experience. My kids love using their own card to checkout books they want. Kuddos to you on homeschooling. I’m always impressed by those who can manage this.
I don’t even really have to encourage, to be honest, my son is a born bookworm. He loves ready above all other activities, and at not even 2.5 he has already taught himself (with no help from me) to read some simple words. That said, this is still a bit above his skills…for now. I’d like to win for my nephews 🙂
My husband was like that too Dayna, a self-taught reader. My kids love books, always have, but the reading for joy part was a struggle when they were younger. The subscription would make a great gift too, great idea.
