Cleaning Up Chalk Art

Some parents may shy away from chalk crafts because of the mess they cause. And some chalk artwork may prove to be a bit more difficult to clean up.

However, we are here to put your mind at ease and offer a few tips and suggestions on how to deal with the cleanup following chalk artwork.

1. Cleaning Chalkboard Walls

To clean a chalkboard wall, simply add a couple of drops of dish soap to a bucket of water. Use a soft cloth or washcloth to wipe down the chalkboard.

If there is chalkboard paint, remove it with an eraser or damp cloth; however, you may find you need a bit more elbow grease to clean chalkboard paint compared to regular chalk.

2. Removing Liquid Chalk

A Magic Eraser is always great for cleaning up those tough and stubborn liquid chalk messes. However, you want to test it out first to make sure it won’t damage any surfaces you are cleaning.

You can also try using a baby wipe or an ammonia-based cleaning solution.

3. Cleaning Chalk from Concrete

If your kids had a fun day outside drawing all over the driveway and sidewalks and there is no rain in the forecast, you may be wondering how to clean up your little artist’s chalk art outside. It’s easy!

You can use a garden hose to spray down the concrete and then brush the chalk areas with a stiff-bristled brush.

If there is tough chalk you can’t remove, you may need to scrub a bit more with a sponge and a mildly abrasive liquid detergent.

4. Removing Chalk Stains from Clothing

If chalk made its way to your child’s clothing – and you know it is a definite possibility, you will want to blot the stained area with alcohol and then wash the clothing in hot water with your laundry detergent. Repeat this process until the chalk has disappeared from the clothes.
