Learning Tools for Kids Created by Moms

I love discovering new companies started by moms. 2Fish Kids started by two Canadian moms is one such company. They are responsible for two great learning tools for kids: My Week (3+) an interactive wipe-off magnetic calendar and Baby Talk (1+) a writable board book for recording your baby's first 20 words.

My Week

MyWeekMy youngest heads to kindergarten this fall and like all moms I want to make sure she's ready. We've been working on doing things independently, like getting dressed and going to the bathroom, washing her hands and tidying up after herself. With two older siblings the whole idea of school and a new routine isn't really new but I am trying to get her use to having a more structured day.

My Week is an interactive, wipe-off magnetic calendar. The calendar comes with magnetic icons for key events happening during the week, like visiting the dentist or going to the library or having a play date, or just cleaning up. It also comes with a few blank magnetic pieces for you to write your own special icons. This is great for establishing a weekly schedule.

Beyond the schedule, My Week also helps kids to understand the days of the week, the months and the seasons. I love the little character used to mark Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday. There are also various weather icons so the kids can learn to observe outside and indicate what they think the weather is like. The calendar comes with a write-on/wipe-off marker so you can make notes or personalize the calendar easily and change it at any point.

When we go downstairs for breakfast, my daughter's calendar is the first place she goes. She'll excitedly announce what we have planned today (the Today character helps). When we first opened the My Week my daughter was excited, which is expected when something new arrives, but I'm impressed with her continued interest in the calendar even after a few weeks of using it. She's worked it into her own morning routine, even if I forget. My two older kids lament the fact that they don't have one of their own. There's a great video of the ladies from 2Fish Kids talking about the creation of My Week.

Baby Talk

BabyTalkMy kids are beyond first words, but after looking at Baby Talk I'm nostalgic for that phase. This small boardbook has enough writable pages to record your child's first 20 words. Each page consists of a line to write the word along with a big space to include a representation of the word (like a drawing or a photograph or sticker). There's also an area to record how your child pronounces the word as well as the date and age of your child. They've even included a small area to write any important details, like 'Mary said cat when we were at Grandma's house'. There's also a space for personalizing the book on the front cover.

Baby Talk not only makes a great keepsake of those special first words but it's also a great personalized first reader for your child. They will enjoy being able to read their own book with the words they know. What a great gift for mom and dad and baby.

I love supporting mom based businesses but sometimes products can look that way, like they've been put together in the basement. Both My Week and Baby Words impressed me very much with their quality. I am looking forward to giving my sister Baby Talk for baby #4 due this summer.

The Baby Talk is a neat idea because I never get "official" scrapbooks done. This would be fast but still really cute.

I'd love to get "My Week"! DS is just starting to give us some insight to the "terrible two's". I'm learning that, by letting him know and prepare for events ahead of time, I can sometimes prevent meltdowns.

My week would be great for my sons school. It is a school for kids with autism. Planning out a day with visual aids is a huge help in preparing an autistic child for what is to come in their day.
