Harumika Lets Your Child Become a Fashion Designer

Like most girls her age, my seven-year-old daughter has big dreams about what she wants to be when she grows up. A veterinarian. A writer. A mom. The list goes on and changes often. Her latest ambition is to be a fashion designer.

harumika-style-starter-setShe loves to dress and redress her assortment of Barbies, giving her a chance to create new outfits but this is based on existing clothes. Then she was introduced to Harumika, a new and innovative way kids can design their own fashion line.

What makes Harumika unique is the dress form that comes with the kit. Kids just drap fabric over the form in anyway they want and tuck it into the back; no glue or sewing or cutting. This makes it something my daughter can do completely on her own, which she loves.

Whatever outfit that is created isn’t permanent; you can’t take the finished outfit off the form and put it on a Barbie. You can’t even save it. If you want to make a new outfit you have to dismantle the original one and start a new one. This actually wasn’t an issue with my daughter. If she created an outfit she really liked she’d leave it on the form for the day but by the time the next day rolled around she was eager to create a new outfit.

The kit we tried was the Harumika Style Starter Set (6+). It came with 3 swatches of fabric, fashion accessories (like 2 belts but could be used for other things) and some stickers and stick-on gems. You might think with only 3 fabric swatches you would be limited in what you can design, but my daughter has been using her Harumika Style Starter Set for about a week and hasn’t come up dry on an idea. The brochure included gave her some ideas as well as encouraging her to think about using the fabrics in different ways: twisting it, folding it, layering it. You can also add to your designs with Harumika Stlye Accents (which I'm sure will be on my daughter's wish list).

My daughter demonstrates how easy it is to use in this little video:

You can visit the Harumika website to see the other fashion designer sets available in the line. You can find them at Toys R Us and Zellers.
