Pop Culture: Oscar Picks

Written by Dee Brun

As I am writing this the count down to the Oscars is 07days:11hrs:16min and it’s no secret that I love award shows. Not sure why but I am glued to the television from the hot mess of the red carpet till the last award is given out. The biggest dilemma that I face is that more often than not, I have never seen any of the movies nominated. With four kids unless it’s made by Disney or Pixar, chances are I haven’t seen it. I just saw the Social Network last night and because I am so late to the party, after all the hype, I thought it was just so so.

Pop Culture: Oscar PicksSo I have to make my Oscar picks on who I think is going to win and since I have not seen any of the movies I will do it using other criteria like: movie trailer, hotness and all around appeal. Not very scientific is it?

So here are the nominees:

Best Picture: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone.

I want to pick Toy Story 3, merely because I have seen it 456 times, but I am going to have to go with The King’s Speech. Only because it has won everything else and with movies like this they usually sweep the awards. Now a good upset would be The Fighter, merely for the hotness of Mark Walhberg.

Actor in a Leading Role: Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Colin Firth, James Franco.

I would love to see James Franco win here, just from the trailers this movie looks like it was a tough one to film. I also like him and think his acceptance speech would be hilarious since he always sounds like he has been smoking “Pineapple Express”. However I do believe Colin Firth will walk home with the golden statue.

Actress in a Leading Role: Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams.

Quite frankly I don’t have a favourite here. I am sure it will be Natalie Portman as she has won almost everything else. I do think it would be great to see Annette Bening win, she has a cool factor for me and I can’t help but love her Al Pacino’esque hair style.

Directing: Black Swan, The Fighter, The King's Speech, The Social Network, True Grit.

I think this statue will go to The King’s Speech. Even though I thought the movie was only meh meh, it would be cool to see Social Network win merely because of the content of the movie. Who knew that a movie about a Facebook and a bunch of college kids could garner so much attention?

Ok, those are my picks. Will you be watching? Do you care? Do you have a big party ?
