After last weeks extraordinary episode of Glee, how could I not write about this phenomenon of a show. Before I go any further, I feel the need to be honest with you by telling you that I do not watch Glee. Please don’t judge. I did however watch “The Power of Madonna” episode and I have to say...that was good television. Not to mention the back lash from the last almost 5 minutes being cut off of those who DVR’d the program. So much so that it prompted Fox to re-air the episode on the Friday, and all this prompted me to do some homework and find out why this show has such a huge following of GLEEKS. Apparently their are now two types of people on the planet...Gleeks and Non-Gleeks.
This Madge episode also sparked an apparent interest in Brittany Spears agent who called the Glee people wanting to offer up her song book for a full on Brittany episode...oh sloppy seconds...
Glee was born of the mind of Ryan Murphy it’s creator, who also created Nip/Tuck, a show that I watched religiously before it jumped the shark, or at least made it’s breasts to big. Glee is a musical-comedy-drama that is aspiring for underdogs everywhere and I believe this is part of it’s huge appeal. Another huge draw of the show is naturally the music. With Glee: The Music, Volume 1, released November 3, 2009 becoming a huge commercial success, with over 2 million digital sales. It is very fair to say that society , as the show, loves the idea of having daily theme music in their lives. As a mom of four I can contest that on more than one occasion I would of loved to hear “That Smell” by Leonard Skynyrd blast though my house while poised at the change table.
The last draw seems to be the cast, with my personal favorite being Sue Sylvester played by Jane Lynch. I have been a Jane fan for years and think she a fabulous character actor and almost as funny as me...(insert canned laughter here). The rest of the cast were virtually unknowns before the show made it big, thus making it easier for the viewers to relate and characters more believable. With the down pour of adjectives about the show such as uplifting, inspiring and revolutionary, how can one NOT watch. The show has even garnered it’s own iPhone App.
With all the lovers of course there has to come some haters, who say things like “What is all the fuss about?” and “I don’t get it”. For once I can’t judge, and that just kills me as I am the first to admit I can be a little judgy wudgy...So I went to the one source where I knew I could tap into some of the most intellectual and imaginative minds on the planet...Twitter of course...and here is what some fabulous tweeps had to say about this four letter word.
@JackiYo I love all the cheesy songs, esp 80s/90s ones I don't hear very often. AND it's where I got my theme song "Defying Gravity"
@prossel OMG #glee rocks! Sue Sylvester is a no BS kind of woman who cracks me up
@AbsolutCJ each week! Never mind the brilliant music. This weeks episode-WOW. I just like the singing and dance routines. Probably because I can't do either of them.
@MresHotMom Everyone has those moments when you wish you could live your life as a musical & break into song randomly.
@bitofmomsense Gleek all the way. What would be great is if the show gives birth to a greater interest in live musical theatre too!
So wether your a Gleek or Non-Gleek you can’t argue with the fact that this silly little show has really given people something to sing about...and I would love to hear your opinion on this t.v. sensation. Why should I give up my Tuesday night TV time slot for Glee?
Cheers
Dee Brun
