Hollywood's Do-Overs

There is one thing almost as popular as cheating on your spouse or releasing a sex tape these days in Hollywood and that is the Re-Make. It seems that there are no original ideas left in Hollywood. If it is not a reality show then itʼs a re-make, both on the big screen and small. Has the Hollywood well dried up? popculture-movie-remakesOr are times that tough that they are cutting corners by not having to write original screen plays? Or having to pay “people” to sit in a think tank and make new shit up?

Being a child of the 80ʼs and a huge movie buff, I feel personally slighted when these movies I grew up with are being reworked, remade and turned into 3D disasters. I think certain movies that are classic to pop culture should be protected, under some kind of NO re-make law. It could happen...

This year we saw Alice in Wonderland come to life by Tim Burton, so drop a hit of acid and check that one out. Johnny Depp is way hotter as Captain Jack. Clash of the Titans got a face lift and was brought back by CGI, was there real actors in it? The Karate Kid came out, again. Staring Will Smith's son and Jackie Chan. Sorry, team Ralph Macchio for me! Nightmare on Elm Street made a come back, that movie kept me awake for two months. One should not mess with Wes Craven.

The Hollywood rumor mill has so many more re-makes apparently in the works. The Breakfast Club, Footloose, Dune, Fame, Death Wish, The Dirty Dozen, The Thing, Meatballs, Short Circuit, Escape from New York, The Birds, Tron and the list goes on. Some of these movies were really bad the first time around, so why remake them? Did I mention Red Sonja was on the list? These are only about a quarter of the ones I read about that are is “so called” talks to be re-made. Will we see anything original again?

Do you go see remakes? Is it a good thing? I took my son to see the new Karate Kid, he preferred the original. He is however looking forward to the new Tron as the effects in the original are “lame”. LAME? This was Hollywood magic to me back in the day. Glowing onsies...whatʼs not to love.

So if you could re-make a Hollywood movie, what would it be? I loved the movies Some Kind of Wonderful and Adventures in Babysitting. These could be fun to see again with a whole new cast. Maybe I can cast Miley Cyrus and Spencer Pratt. Or I could jusy dig my eye out with a dull spoon now.

Take 2...Decades Later Martini

popculture-movie-remakes-cocktail2 ounces vodka
raspberries
1 ounce crème de cacao

Muddle raspberries with vodka. Using frozen berries that you have thawed is always best, lots of flavour and juice. Add to a shaker filled with ice including creme de cacao. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Serve with a box of chocolates, a la Forest Gump.

Cheers
