Ce-WEB-rities

In todays society celebrities seem more accessible than ever, I live at George Clooneyʼs house for heavens sake, if thatʼs not access I donʼt know what what is. Between the crazy amount of celebrity news (gossip) outlets to the scads of celebrities using social media, celebs have become more “real” than ever. The question is, is it too much? Is the Hollywood mystery gone? Does it make the characters on the big or small screen less believable? Or does it work? Do you like them more? Do you “like” them on FaceBook or Follow them on Twitter?

cewebrities-popcultureSo I called upon my crack research team (google) to investigate who is the “Whoʼs Who” of Facebook and Twitter in the celebrity world. Turns out the results were not quite what I expected. Vin Diesel happens to be the most popular celeb on FB with 8,782,945 people liking his page, hmm who knew. I mean he is cool and all but would not consider him to be among the “A List”. Turns out it is because he posts quite regularly and actually interacts and has exchanges with his Facebook fans, his pictures arenʼt to shabby either. The whole Facebook celebrity page is a little ascu, for example Patrick Star the fleshy pink start fish from the Sponge Bob cartoon is #7 on the list as far as fans go. Beating out such stars as Demi Moore, Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman, this I donʼt understand, but to each his own. I myself donʼt “like” any celebrities on Facebook, not even George, I know itʼs not him, he told me he doesnʼt like Facebook.

So what of this beast known as Twitter? Celebrities have taken to this media form quite enthusiastically as they can post, make comments, promote movies or events in real time with almost immediate response and impact. Tom Cruise is one of the newbie actors taking to the tweets and is promoting the crap out of his upcoming summer movie Knight and Day. Hopefully the movie is a better than his tweets, heʼs a little dry. As anyone on Twitter will tell you, it was Ashton Kutcher and his popularity contest with CNN to see who would be the first to reach a million followers that truly brought Twitter to the lime light. Appearing on several talk shows tweeting and chatting up his campaign bid. What seemed to be silly fun turned out to be a huge campaign to buy mosquito nets for children in Africa. Even though they lost their race to a million CNN donated 10,000 mosquito nets to Africa followed in turn by Ryan Seacrest, Larry King, Oprah Winfrey, and Demi Moore, among others.

That is an example of the good of celebrities on Twitter, but of course with the good comes the bad. Most recently Perez Hiltonʼs (no link to crap) asinine post of a shot of Miley Cyrus, to the odd rantings of Jon Meyer, less tweeting more singing please. There are also those d-elebrities trying to use Twitter to reconnect them to “their people” in hopes of rekindling some shred of fame. Scott Baio drones on about nothing, there are slews of reality T.V. celebs still trying to squeeze a few more seconds out of their 15 minutes. Kelsey Grammer is always pimping his new self-radio style web site, he is actually quite interactive with his followers, sometime too much so having been a victim of a Twitter scam himself. There are many PR reps out there who are sweating it out on a daily basis just waiting to see what messes their clients tweets will get them in.

So whatʼs your take on the whole thing? Would love to hear any fab or not so fab social media celebrity close encounters...

cewebrity-cocktail-popcultureWhoʼs in your network?...Punch

1 ounce Malibu Rum
1/2 ounce Melon Liqueur
2 ounces peach Juice
2 ounces lemonade

Shake all ingredients well with ice and serve in a rock glass over ice. Garnish with fresh mint, blueberries and responsible social media skills...or a valiant attempt at least!
