Unless you live under the preverbal rock...a fabulous diamond rock of course...you have heard and seen all the head lines this past week about Sandra Bullock. She announced her divorce from her husband Jesse James and the adoption of a beautiful baby boy, Louis Bardo Bullock. What a crazy life when someone can have such a full tilt ending and a rapturous beginning all in same week. So I thought it was fitting to talk this week about celebrity adoption.
These days celebrity adoption seems almost as common as a good celebrity scandal. We get inundated with happy, smiling video of Madonna traipsing thru Malawi. Every time Brangelina goes on vacation it seems like they come back with more than just T-Shirts for souvenirs. Is it safe to say that celebrity adoption is becoming a trend? One might think so, but celebs have been adopting children for decades, it is just recently that it has become a photo op and PR extravaganza. Some celebrities actually keep their private lives private and add to their families without all the fan fair and tabloid covers.
Back in 1934 George Burns and Gracie Allen adopted a daughter Sandra , due to Allen’s heart condition. Then in 1945 they adopted their son Ronnie. In 1939, Bob Hope and his wife of 69 years, started their family by adopting a daughter, then did so again 3 more times. Shortly after his wife passed away, Oscar De La Renta adopted day old Moises who is now 25 from the Dominican Republic. I had no clue about this one, nor did I know that Al Rocker has a 25 year old adopted daughter. Or that Julie Andrews adopted 2 children from Vietnam...all news to me.
In more recent years the list of celebs adopting reads like a “Who’s Who of Hollywood”. Tom Cruise, Sharon Stone, Diane Keaton, Meg Ryan, Rosie O’Donnell and Sheryl Crow (who’s son Wyatt is the spitting image of Matt Damon...hmmmm there may be a story there...) just to name a few. Also, we can not forget Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, or more specifically we can’t forget that Woody married his own adopted daughter, Soon Yi. The ICK factor is far to large on this one.
This more recent headline with Sandra Bullock also spawned a whole barrage of news wire chatter, back and forth about adopting locally vs abroad, and if celebrities get a “pass” to the front of the line. Katherine Heigle, adopted a baby girl from South Korea and openly admitted that her adoption was fast tracked due to her daughters special needs. Meg Ryan tried for 10 years to adopt domestically before she adopted her daughter from China.
So what are your thoughts? Should they adopt locally before abroad? Does dragging cameras through the remote poverty stricken village get you to the front of the line? Does money and celebrity “buy” everything? ...I do believe that their money & celebrity does help in speeding up the process, really how can it not? I am on the ever so popular fence however on the local versus abroad debate. As a mother I believe every child no matter what deserves a happy, healthy home life...Yet on the other side of the fence, I believe in helping at home first...I know, I know, can’t have it both ways...
