We got a Cava-Tzu!

Cava what?  Cava-Tzu.  A puppy.  That’s right - we got a puppy.  Because you know, our family does not have enough going on already!

cava-tzuBut I have logic mixed in with my crazy emotions that sucked me into this adorable little heaven-sent being.  She’s small.  Very small.  4 pounds small.  Of course she’ll grow a bit, but still be small enough to go with us wherever we go and fit into our life just perfectly.

We have been planning to get a puppy for a long time, but the timing was never right.  But now that I have a bit more balance in my life, I am able to dedicate time, love and training to this little angel.

Pictures are so hard to show how small she is.  She is 5 months old.  A Cava-Tzu is a cross between the  Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Shih Tzu.

Kids LOVE her.  We LOVE her.  She is such a snuggle muffin, sleeps and plays well.  Even our cat has only hissed the odd time at her.

On to Everything Puppy!

I also have a Cava Tzu, his name is Fiji. I do agree, Cava Tzu’s temperments are perfect! He loves everyone, especially kids and he was very easy to train and he’s VERY smart.. too smart I think sometimes.

We just bought our little guy (Percy) last week. His Mum is a Maltese Shihtzu and Dad is a Shihtzu x cavalier. He is just wonderful and so happy and sweet. My 2 sons love him to bits and he is also wonderful with our cat Ernie.

We’ve had our Cava Tzu for 2 years, she’s the best, house trained in only 2 days, and loves the cold weather. he’s very obedient and never wanders off

She is absolutely adorable and sure to bring your family many years of pleasure. I just wanted to offer a word of advice. I owned and operated a dog grooming business for a few years and I wanted to let you in on some grooming tips.

Both the Cavalier and the Shih Tzu’s can have a tendency to matt, especially in the legs, armpits and behind the ears. Matting is extremely uncomfortable for dogs and can make them cranky. To avoid having to have the dog completely shaved because of matting try to spend a few minutes everyday focusing on the problem areas. I promise you in the long run both you and the dog will be much happier.

If you have any questions just let me know!

Good luck with the new puppy!

  8. I just found out that the official name for my little mix is Cava-Tzu. I just adopted a 21/2 year old Cava-Tzu from a wonderful rescue group for small dogs. He lived his first 2=years in a cage at a puppy mill which was thankfully shut down last spring. This rescue group fostered him for a few months, got him spayed, vet care etc and advertized him on Petfinders.com. What a wonderful way to find a new pet. Clayton, name he came with, but we love it, is a fabulous little boy. He weighs 17 pounds and is light tan and white. His face resembles the Cavalier more but his tail is the cute curly tail like the shih tzu. For a little guy who never was in a house, never on a leash, never housebroken, he is doing great. He was housebroken within the first day, I took him out every 4 hours and praised him highly when he did his job. Also he walks great on a leash and sits and fetches and obeys after only 1 or 2 corrections. He loves playing with toys and is a joy. He has changed our lives. I feel so lucky that I accidently found this mix of two wonderful breeds and feel I have the best of both. We’ve only had him three weeks. He bonded with me within an hour after his foster mom left, and he is stuck like glue to me. slowly he is letting me out of his sight, but hasn’t fully bonded with my husband yet, but each day he is better and more comfortable with him. We are going to start in a beginner obecience class (gentle) the end of Aug. mainly for socialization and fun. He is a little cautious with strangers and I think this will help him. Everyday he is better and better. I hope others with find this wonderful blend of happiness.
