Well - THAT I was not expecting. Off on my holiday - sun, sand and fun and WAMO.
Silly me, I had the Mirena IUD removed a couple of weeks prior to leaving for our vacation. I have had a rough ride with Mirena from the get go and was nothing but thrilled to move on from my 5 year old friend, Mirena. (Yes, I kept it for the entire 5 years.)
It came out of nowhere. I went to bed feeling relaxed and happy to be on holidays, woke up with a crushing, heavy, almost suffocating feeling of blah. Not just any blah, but I need to go home now because I cannot stand this feeling anymore blah.
That was day one.
After a 12 hour journey home, I hid from pretty much everything for 4 days. I had no idea where this anxiety, this weight, this hell was coming from. Then it hit me.
Mirena, you got me.
Sure enough, I searched her out on Google and it happens. They even have a name for it: The Mirena Crash.
Apparently, after having the Mirena IUD removed, some women experience “The Mirena Crash”. Some women. This woman.
I won’t lie. It sucked. But 4 days later, back to normal. Thank you very much.
Would love to hear from you if you experienced “The Mirean Crash”. How long did it last, what helped? For me, just letting it be, giving myself some space and waiting it out was what I needed.

I had my mirena in for 3 years, I just got it removed the middle of November. I didn’t have any problems when getting it taken out or after. I loved having it, I just didn’t like the weight gain when I initially got it. But other than that everything was fine, no headaches, bleeding, or crashes.

I had the mirena for two years. It was a last option as many birth control pills did not work since I had my son in 2006. I got the mirena removed November 15, 2011. The procedure went fine. I had some small bleeding for a couple days, nothing serious. That is, until December 19. Heavy flow, debilitating cramps, bloating, major back pain. I had cramps that has brought me to tears. Then they went away after four days. But the bleeding hasn’t. I am writing this post on January 7, 2012, the 19th day of the worst menstrual experience ever. Three days ago the cramps and pain started again, and it doesn’t feel like it is ending anytime soon. 19 DAYS!!!! If I had known about this “mirena crash” I probably wouldn’t have gotten it. Good luck to all who do have it and good job for those who are researching before they get it.

Im really scared I just had it taken out and I am experiencing blood as well. Im just thinking its my period but, luckily I do have an obgyn appointment on monday for a shot of birth control. Please someone help me! Does the shot work and will it stop my bleeding?
I am getting mine taking off in two weeks. Lately I been spotting and I been having my hair falling off! Constantly. Im like a shedding cat.
So I can’t wait to take it off. I been having it for 3 years and a half.
My other question is would it hurt when I take it off and would I’ll be bleeding for a while??
I had my mirena for 2 1/2 years and had minimal issues. Had a yeast infection for the first time in my life but I don’t know if I can contribute it to the Mirena. Had bad cramping when first placed but after that (a few weeks) I didn’t really have any problems. Then over the past 4-5 months or so I started to notice my weight go up and up and I hadn’t changed anything in my exercise or diet. I also noticed more hair loss than what is normal for me over the past 6 months as well. But I was under a lot of stress this year and again I can’t for certain blame Mirena. I had my mierna removed on 1/5/12 and started bleeding last night (1/11/12). A normal period, no gushing, no giant clots, no major cramping. I had the normal symptoms that are associated with PMS and I feel that I maybe was a tad bit more emotional than usual but I couldn’t call it a crash. I would recommend Mirena but I would just say to keep an eye on your body. Every body is different and will react in a different way. Plus think that you had a constant stream of hormones in your body that are now gone. You are going to experience some sort of change. There are also other forms of IUDs that are hormone free as well. Good luck to all!

i got my mirena out the 4th of this month and right before i just got over a uti. I have been having unprotected sex and am now having really bad bladder control could i be pregnant?
I had my mirena fitted after my daughter was born 5 years ago Since then i had such bad deprecion I couldn’t even bring myself to leave the house no medication worked, I developed a lump in my neck wich turned out to be a cyst in my thyroid so I had an operation to get half my thyroid removed, I gained 3 stone my face was spotty dry and covered in dark corse hair which is a nightmare, I didn’t want sex at all I didn’t enjoy it and it hurt loss of appetite and tired all the time I didn’t put any of it down to the mirena till I researched it but now it finally makes sence.
In December last year (1 months ago) I started getting really bad cramping and loosing blood and big clots this was very painfull any weired as i didnt get a single period the whole time it was in the doctor made me an appointment to get my mirena removed(almost 5 years in).
After I had it removed I had extream bleeding and cramping for 10 days after the bleeding I still had cramping, that has stopped now but I still feel tired all the time don’t want to get out of bed I still have the bad spotty dry hairy face but I have lost 8 lb so it’s getting better. I have to go back to doctors in February to have blood tests don’t to make sure it’s not my thyroids causing the hair and weight gain. The doctor said by February my body including periods should be back to normal so fingers crossed.

How long does it take to start feeling normal after the mirena removed?? I just had it removed after 10 months of hell and hair loss… Its been a nightmare, Im hoping to start feeling back to normal soon.. especially awful that it falls on deaf ears at my doctors office..
Hi all, I am 61 and had the mirena 5 years ago, inserted under anaesthetic as the opening to the womb was too tight! I had it because of really haevy flooding, clots and pain, for me it was a miracle in the gynae sense, I have not bled for five years and apart from gaining about 18lbs have not had side effects, at least not that they say are related to it, in this time i developed a thyroid cyst and had to have half my thyroid removed, i also developed shoch type pains in my chest ans have had these for nearly 4 years now, no real diagnosis but no one seems to connect ot to the mirena so I am wondering if anyone else has these? I am having it removed tomorrow and after reading all this am dreading it, I don’t even know if they will be able to do it without anaesthetic because of the insertion problems, when I had it put in I had three very large fibroids and don’t know if they are still there or not!! I am really concerned about ‘the crash’ and wondering whther to have another put in????

Thanks for the site! I have had the IUD in for 8 weeks and the past 4 have been absolute hell. The first month was great with no issues however since then I have experienced everything from major heart palpatations where I thought I was having a heart attack,to extreme migraine headaches that felt like my head was going to explode from the pressure, dizziness, constant nausea and breast pain. I had it put in to slow the bleeding from a uterine fibroid but couldn’t take it anymore so I had it removed today. As a result, I will have to continue to be a “CSI crime scene” for the next 2 months until I can have the fibroid removed however its been a few hours and I am already starting to feel better.
The insane part is that my doctors have made me feel crazy when I told them about my experience and kept trying to tell me that it wasn’t the Mirena. So the only word of advice I would give anyone is to trust YOURSELF and do what you have to do to feel better, I am glad that I did.
Does anyone know how long it will take to move out of my system? Since the removal, I have still had some of the palpatations and the anxiety.. I just want it to stop so I can get on with my life.
Thanks and Good Luck!
I had my IUD taken out January 9, I pretty much had problems for about a year. I started out needing it about 5 years ago when my periods were lasting on average about 19 days, with 3 days in between the next period. I had my first IUD inserted and after 3 months of my body adjusting to it, it worked great…but only for 2 years, supposed to last 5. I had it taken out and bled severely for 3 weeks before I called my gyno’s office demanding they prescribe something. I got 2 medications, shouldn’t have taken them both at the same time, made me extremely ill. It did help. Then after 6 weeks of it being removed I had another one put in, thinking that it was a faulty IUD. It was super painful having the new one put in, because my gyno had to ‘test’ the tissue areas, due to my c-section scar tissue, to see if there was a better placement area. It’s common to have abnormal periods, reactions for 3-4 months, so I thought after that I should be all good. Well it seemed like there was problem after problem. Most of the time I had spotting after sex, which was annoying. I’d have week long heavy periods, which wasn’t common. At my 6 month check up I was told that I had cervicitis, which was an infection on the cervical wall. That explained a lot. After 10 days of treatment it was all cleared up. I was thrilled! For the first time I had no discharge, no bleeding and no odour. That lasted a week. It was like my IUD was saying ‘oh I’m not contributing to that infection, so let’s do this instead’….. I then developed, overnight, a severe swollen/inflamed cervix. Like the term swollen shut. It was so awful. I was to the gyno and my family doc every 2-3 weeks. Nothing prescribed worked for more than a couple of days. It was excruciating to even try to have sex. So late December 2011, I called my gyno’s office and said ‘I think I’m allergic to my IUD”. His response was “oh no, I don’t think you are”. This was a few days before my boyfriend took me away on a trip for New Years. I had to just go back and see him 3 weeks later. I suffered 3 more weeks and then had it removed. Within 24 hours the swollenness was almost completely gone. I fully expected to bleed heavily for at least 4 weeks, but this time it wasn’t that bad. After 2 weeks I’m almost not bleeding at all. Just waiting now for my usual awesome libido to come back to normal. Good luck ladies, sometimes it’s frustrating having all these girl issues!
Ok I just got mine put in 2 days ago. I’m freaking out and Paranoid that something will go wrong. I haven’t Had any kids either. Should I get it removed???

The information you provided really helped us. Thank you very much
I had my mirena for four months. Horrible from the start.. first of all I have never had a baby naturally, so they had to open my cervics to get it in. very painful.. I had terrible cramps for two weeks, bleeding. My first period was 21 days long, just in time for my vacation (cruise) cramping, heavy..
then on the 14th of this month I woke up to the worst cramps ever.. loosing more blood then I thought I had in my body, clots so big it splashed up when hitting the toilet.. After two days of this the cramps got worse and the clots.. then in one of the clots, there it was the mirena.. My body had done like a miscarriage to get the thing out of me.. Now almost two weeks later I am tired, headaches all the time, painful sex, breast tender and the worst back pain ever.
sister in law text me this morning telling me about this mirena crash, so here I am.. Go to Dr. tomorrow.. she has already said something about putting it back in.. but there is no way I will have that in my body again..
good luck to anyone who get this thing
I want to thank everyone who has made a comment about the Mirena. I have only taken the pill, about 13 years now, and decided that I wanted something different and not have to worry about to much. I’ve done my research and reading just about all the comments here, I think I’m sticking with what I know, the pill. Thanks again.
I have had my mirena for almost 5 years. I decided to have it removed this upcoming thursday! After ready alot of these post i am becoming very anxious. I have also had horrible acne,Headaches, feeling like pregnant, back aches. Emotional. Snappy, Sharp pains in my chest, Severe Cramps(the first few years were the worse). I want this to be a smooth ride but it sounds far from that! Will update after thursday!
hello, I had my mirena inserted oct 2010 after I had my daughter. I have booked my appointment to have it removed this week. I havent had too many side effects, but side effects none the less and I want them to stop. I am wondering seeing as how I have only had it in just over a year upon removal will there be as many side effects as one who had it for the full five years? I am nervous now because I pictured relief from bloating, cramping, mood swings and discharge….anyone care to shed some light on the situation haha.
thanks!
I had the Marena and after being one month shy of my five years I had it removed because my husband and I decided we wanted to have another baby. When I first got the Marena I spotted daily for probably the first 3 months then had an occasional light period here and there and everything else was fine… Except I had a lot of acne issue that I never had before and perhaps the IUD was the cause and now that I read some of the other posts my hair did thin quite a bit as well… Hmmm??? Anyway, I had the Marena removed Jan. 13, 2012. By Jan. 17th I started spotting then by the 19th the blood was just pouring out! I was soaking though a super tampon and super pad in less than an hour! The blood would just come gushing and I would have clots ranging from quarter sized to the size of my hand everytime I went to the bathroom. One time the clot was so big I could feel it coming out and literally had to push it out like I as giving birth! I was mortified! It is now Feb. 1st and this bleeding doesn’t seem like its stopping anytime soon. Is this normal? How long can I expect this to go on for? Obvioulsy I can’t get pregnant while bleeding/having a period and I can’t predict my fertility cause the bleeding hasn’t stopped. What should I do if I can do anythibg at all? In addition… We are planning a vacation at the end of March and at the rate I’m going, I’m afraid I will still be bleeding! Lol! Seriously though, I can’t get an idea of when my periods will be to know if I should change my travel dates. This is such a inconvenience.
I would appreciate any advice! Thank You!
Hi everyone,
I got my IUD put in about 9 months ago after having my first child (a beautiful baby boy). Needless to say, I have been having all sorts of issues! I have really bad weight gain, really bad acne only on my forehead, cramps, no sex drive at all, painful intercourse, and really bad mood swings. Anyway, about 2 weeks ago I saw my doctor about getting it removed and he talked me out of it because he said all of the other types of birth control will stop me from producing breast milk and he knew that I wanted to keep nursing my son until a year or so on. Any how, after talking to my honey, he and I still think its best to have it removed and take our chances. But after reading all of this I am afraid of what will happen to my body after it is removed. I have a family vacation planned to go to Hawaii on the 14th of this month. Should I wait until after to get it removed so as not to ruined the vacation?
Any comments would help! Thanks
Well, glad to know where my headaches and irritability have been coming from. I had my Mirena for almost 4 years, and about 2 weeks ago it started falling out. (yes, you can tell when it starts to fall out) I asked my doc how much to have it removed, and they wanted $250 to take it out! Finally fell out last night, and now I feel like crud. That migraine headache, achy body, period crud. Isn’t it wonderful they give it a name, but don’t warn you about it.
