Synopsis from Sterling Publishing:
Calvin is one unusual starling! While his siblings and cousins learn to fly, this rare bird lets his imagination soar while reading about pirates, dinosaurs, and other fascinating things. The other birds call him “geeky beaky,” but Calvin just ruffles his feathers and buries his beak in a book. Yet, when it comes time to migrate, poor Calvin suddenly realizes he can't fly! His sisters, brothers, and cousins carry him into the air. But on their way south, the winds blow hard, the trees bend, and the air starts to smell strange. It's a hurricane, and only Calvin can save the day-because he has read all about it! Witty illustrations, an endearing hero, and a delightful story make this a true celebration of the pleasures of reading!
Books are a great way for kids to learn new things, discover new interests and immerse themselves in new worlds. That's exactly what happens to Calvin in Calvin Can't Fly: The Story of a Bookworm Birdie. While his brothers and sisters are chasing bugs, Calvin learns to read. While his brothers and sisters learn about how to fly, Calvin learns about volcanoes and pirates. The fall comes and it's time for Calvin's family to migrate to the south. Although Calvin has read about migration, he has no idea how to fly. His family devise a way to carry him on their journey south but the birds run into a problem. Finally Calvin's book smarts pay-off.
No surprise, books are big in our house so I loved the focus of escaping into them (not literally). Although the story implies that Calvin's reading has distracted him from learning valuable life skills, the ending shows how Calvin's knowledge ends up helping all his family. And in the end, Calvin does develop his flying skills eventually.
Calvin Can't Fly: The Story of a Bookworm Birdie is a fun story to read and is a great way to reinforce the joy of reading and the knowledge you can gain from books.
