Breathe Right Kids Nasal Strips

breathrightBeing a parent is a tough job and making decisions that affect your child's health are the worst. With so much controversy around kids and drugs (whether prescription or over the counter), it's no wonder parents are looking for alternative treatments.

When I received a sample of the new Breathe Right Kids nasal strips, I thought this might be a good drug-free alternative for dealing with stuffy noses during cold and flu season.

Breathe Right Kids sort of remind me of Band-Aids; they're spring-like strips that stick to the top of your child's nose. Their springiness is designed to gently lift your child's nasal passages open and ease congestion caused by a cold that might be keeping your kids up at night. The Breathe Right Kids nasal strips are exactly the same as the standard adult version, except they are made smaller to fit on smaller noses.

stripsonnoseWhen we received our samples my kids weren't suffering from any colds though my daughter insisted she had a stuffy nose at night so we decided to give them a try. When I placed the strip on my daughter's nose she said she could feel the change instantly (feeling her nose open up a little). My son and youngest daughter also wanted to try one, of course. These strips are drug-free, but they are indicated for kids five and older. I think that's mainly be due to the child's nose size. The Breathe Right Kids nasal strip was much to big on my youngest (almost three) and just barely fit on my five-year old son.

The strips also come in three colourful star designs (purple, blue and green).

The next morning I noticed my son's strip had fallen off. I think this is because we took the strip off and tried to reposition it a second time. I think the strips need to go on right the first time since they loose some stickiness if you try to reapply. The instructions have a visual to help you with positioning.

My daughter's strip stayed on all night. In the morning though she couldn't say if it worked for her or not. She tried it a few different nights and each morning she her response would be different: it worked great, it didn't work at all, she wasn't sure if it worked or not.

I think the best test will be when my daughter has a cold (so far we've been lucky). But if my kids are hit by a cold, the Breathe Right Kids might be a step to take before loading my kids up with drugs.
