The latest from our Heart and Soul
Celebrate the holidays with some cupcakes! Bake your favourite cupcakes and use frosting and candies to create special little treats for your friends and family. Here are some simple and fun ideas, and the best part is, once you’ve set up the basics, your kids can customize each creation!
Most of these projects require sprinkles and this is probably the best time of the year to find some. They’re available in the baking aisle of supermarkets, at Michael’s Arts & Crafts, Bulk Barn, and even at Winners. Most of them come in a variety pack – which is perfect!
Christmas Tree Cupcakes
Here is a decorating idea that is fun to make because it allows you and your kids to be extra creative. Edible materials that you will need: white-coloured frosting, green-coloured frosting, sprinkles or candies. Decorating materials that you will need: green gel dye, a piping bag, and an open-star decorating tip.

- Make sure your cupcakes are cooled.
- Using a spatula, spoon, or piping bag, frost the top of the cupcake with a white-coloured frosting to create your snow base.
- Dye a quarter of your frosting green using a gel formula (I recommend Wilton’s Kelly Green).
- Fasten your decorating tip (I recommend Wilton’s No. 21 Open Star Decorating Tip) to your piping bag.
- Fill it with green frosting and push the frosting to the tip. Do a couple of practice squeezes in your frosting bowl.
- Holding the bag over the center of the cupcake, gently squeeze the frosting out, your hands do not have to move from the spot they started. The frosting should spread out to create the base of the tree.
- Stop squeezing, move your piping bag a few centimetres above the base of the tree. Gently squeeze the frosting out to form another level. This one should not be as wide as the first one.
- Stop just before the frosting reaches the edge of the tree’s bottom. Again, move your piping bag a few centimetres above the middle of three. This time, it should be a quick squeeze and then pull upwards to create the pointed tree top.
- Using sprinkles or candies, decorate the tree!

Mini Snowman Cupcakes
These were one of the first decorated cupcakes I made. They are really simple to assemble and look pretty adorable on top of frosting. Edible materials that you will need: white-coloured frosting, three mini marshmallows, and sprinkles.

- Make sure your cupcakes are cooled (it is never a good idea to decorate cupcakes that have just come out of the oven).
- Using a spatula, spoon, or piping bag, frost the top of the cupcake with a white-coloured frosting to create your snow base.
- Bottom marshmallow: doesn’t have to be decorated!
- Middle marshmallow: pick two sprinkles and push them into the marshmallow to create buttons for the snowman. Using long-brown sprinkles push them into the sides to form arms. Be patient, you may need to use a toothpick to create a little hole for the sprinkle to stay in.
- Top marshmallow: choosing two sprinkles, preferably an eye colour, push them in. With an orange-coloured sprinkle, push it in to create the carrot nose.
- Gently pat the bottom marshmallow into the snow base. Center the marshmallow on the frosting for the sturdiest result.
- Use a small dab of frosting between the bottom, middle, and top marshmallow to assemble the snowman. The frosting will act as a glue to keep them together.
- Decorate the surrounding with snowflake sprinkles or some clear sanding sugar for an icy look.
Large Snowman Cupcakes
Here is a variation using the same materials with large marshmallows. To dress up the snow man with a scarf, you will need: fondant, Fruit Roll-Ups, Fruit by the Foot, or Pull and Peel Twizzlers.

- Make sure your cupcakes are cooled.
- Using a spatula, spoon, or piping bag, frost the top of the cupcake with a white-coloured frosting to create your snow base.
- Bottom marshmallow: pick two sprinkles and push them into a marshmallow to create buttons. Make sure they are a little lower so that the scarf does not cover them.
- Top marshmallow: choose two other sprinkles for the eyes and push them in.
- Use a small dab of frosting between the bottom and top marshmallow to glue the two together.
- To give your snowman a scarf, you can use a strip of fondant to wrap around the two marshmallows. A drop of water will help keep the scarf together. With kitchen shears or a knife, create fringes at the end of the scarf. A little bit of water helps make the marshmallow sticky and keeps the scarf up. If you don’t have fondant, you can use flat and thin candies like Fruit Roll-Ups, Fruit by the Foot, or Pull and Peel Twizzlers.
- Gently place the snowman on the frosting.
Snowy Slope Cupcakes
This is a variation on the Christmas tree, adding in a sloping fondant snow bank. Edible materials that you will need: white-coloured frosting, green-coloured frosting, fondant, sprinkles or candies, and icing sugar. Decorating materials that you will need: a rolling pin, a large circle cookie cutter or a knife, green gel dye, a piping bag, and an open-star decorating tip.

- Make sure your cupcakes are cooled.
- Using a spatula, spoon, or piping bag, frost the top of the cupcake with a white-coloured frosting to create your snow base.
- Roll out the fondant (I recommend Satin Ice or Duff) to a thin sheet, about 3 millimetres thick. If you have a large cookie cutter that is larger than the surface of your cupcake, use that. If not, use your knife to cut out a circle (tip, an upside-down bowl or cup makes a great guide).
- Carefully place the fondant over the frosting, make sure that some of the fondant hangs over the cupcake’s edge. This is your snowy slope, you can either construct a frosting tree on top of it, or put a fondant skier, rabbit, polar bear, or penguin on top.
- Dust icing sugar over the cupcake to create the fallen snow look.
Holiday Wreath Cupcakes
Using the same materials as the Christmas Tree Cupcakes, you can transform your cupcakes to look like miniature holiday wreaths. Yes, this is another customizable project for your kids! Edible materials that you will need: frosting, green-coloured frosting, and sprinkles or candies. Decorating materials that you will need: green gel dye, a piping bag, and an open-star decorating tip.

- Make sure your cupcakes are cooled.
- Using a spatula, spoon, or piping bag, frost the top of the cupcake with a frosting in any colour but green.
- Dye a quarter of your frosting green using a gel formula.
- Fasten your open-star decorating tip to your piping bag.
- Fill it with green frosting and push the frosting to the tip. Do a couple of practice squeezes in your frosting bowl.
- Starting along the edge of the cupcake, pipe a small star burst. Going clockwise or counter-clockwise (choose your comfort level), repeat until you’ve made a circle.
- Decorate using fondant, sprinkles, or candies.
Enjoy!
