Popcorn is pretty much a snack staple in our house. If given the chance, my daughter would probably replace all her meals with popcorn. So when I heard about Orville Redenbacker’s new gourmet popcorn, how could I pass on giving it a try.
The new Select White is made with white popping kernels versus the yellow kernels used in traditional popping corn. Another difference is that it’s made with real butter instead of butter flavoring. Okay, so perhaps this is a healthier snack, made with whole grain white popping kernels, but the big question: how does it taste?

We happen to have the original Orville Redenbacker’s Buttery Popcorn so I popped up a bag of the Original Buttery and the new Select White to compare. I’ll be the first to admit how surprised I was to notice the difference in taste, in favor of the Select White.
The Select White has a nice buttery taste, not over powering and without feeling greasy on the fingers. The crisp white colour gives the popcorn a fresh popped feel, the way popcorn should look.
Marketed as a gourmet popcorn, Select White is available at most grocery stores and sells at a slightly higher price than the Original Buttery (a 10-pack box is $4.99 Cdn for Original Buttery versus $6.99 Cdn for Select White).
But in our house the improved taste out weights the additional cost. Select White will become our new popcorn staple for us. I'm glad it comes in large boxes.
