Deck The Halls with Maria S.

3mvotewinLet me put this out there – I am no Martha.

Not even close.

But I try, for the kids’ sake. It’s Christmas after all – no room for Scrooge at my house.

Because we also celebrate my son’s birthday in early December, we don’t normally decorate the house until the second week of December. However, because I am a huge fan of 3M™ Command™ products and EverythingMom, I thought I would attempt to channel Martha early this year and see what happened.

Regardless of what I’m decorating for, I am always trying to minimize any type of damage to our walls or ceiling. This year, I’m especially concerned because we just repainted almost the entire house and we’d like to keep it looking nice and fresh.

Enter 3M™ Command™ hooks – these are perfect for holiday decorating. They come in so many sizes and looks that you can really incorporate them successfully, without any damage and minimal cost. I decided to tackle three areas for this project:

  1. The Front Door
  2. The Front Window
  3. The Mantle

The Front Door: Typically, we hang a wreath on the front of the door and a felt countdown calendar on the back of the door. In the past I’ve used two large door hangars that hang over the door, but I’ve never been a fan of how messy it looked. This year, all I needed was one 3M™ Command™ Timeless Metallic Coated Hook (17063BN-C) attached to the back of the door. YES, the back, and upside down!.

By putting it on the back of the door and upside down, I was able to hook the ribbon over the door onto the hook, and still be able to use it to hang my calendar on the back of the door as well. This hook looks great and holds up to 5 lbs!

The Front Window: The kids love to see things hanging in the front bay window at Christmas time. We normally hang a lit wreath that matches the rest of our outdoor lighting setup, but again not until mid-December. In the meantime, we’ll hang stars or snowflakes that the kids have made or bring home from school. This year, my five year old picked out some “sparkly snowflakes” from a local store for her “masterpiece”. In the past, I’ve used thumbtacks (I bet Martha uses thumbtacks ALL THE TIME). This year, I used 3M™ Command™ general purpose clear hooks (17006C-VP) and attached them to the top of the front bay window.

They’re not obvious because they’re clear and they hold up to .5 lbs which was just right for this job – the five year old is very pleased. I call that a win.

The Mantle: With the mantle I wanted simple, and minimal. I’m not a fan of stuffed Santas and tchotchkes. I found this silver ivy that I thought would be perfect. I was able to use two different 3M™ Command™ hooks to attach the ivy to the brick fireplace without any need for nails. I used the Utility hooks (17002C) on the wall on either side of the mantle, and the general purpose clear hooks (17006C-VP) on the mantle to hook the ivy along the mantle. Yes, the hooks attached to the flat surface of the brick and did a great job! I love the look – it’s very simple but I think it looks great in the room and it adds a special touch to our fireplace!

There are SO many great things you can use 3M™ Command™ hooks for, when decorating. Whether the project is elaborate or simple, they are a great way to get the look you want without creating any permanent changes to your walls, doors or ceilings.

Happy Holidays!
