My kids love crafts. They love drawing and painting and creating sculptures. If it involves paint or glue or scissors or markers, they’ll be all over it. And like any proud mama, I’ve displayed many pieces of art, we’ve stored some of our favourites in an art box and have giving many as gifts to the relatives. But sometimes I feel like we’re over-run by paper crafts. I think that’s why I love crafts that produce finished objects, like some of the items available from Janlynn.
Last fall we had a chance to review some of their colouring crafts. This past March Break we tried a few of their painting crafts.
This kit included a ceramic piggy bank, 6 non-toxic paint pots, one paint brush, and a paint pot of varnish for sealing the bank when finished.
My seven-year-old loved this. The bank is pretty plain leaving the creative design totally up to the child. My daughter loved creating patterns on her pig. She used the paints offered but tried mixing colours too. And since there was no preprinted face on the bank, she could create her animal's face any way she wanted (or not have one if she so choose). My daughter plans on giving her finished bank to her best friend as a gift (they’re saving money for a trip together I’ve been told). There’s a cork stopper in the bottom of the bank so no need to crack this one open when your kids need to get at their funds.
The bank we tried was a pig but you can also get a cow bank.
I must admit, my son isn’t big on crafts. He sometimes will create pirate treasure maps or battle plans, and we’ve recently started encouraging him to create building plans for his Lego structures. But when we pulled the Design Your Own Soccer Ball kit out, he was all over it!
The kit comes with a regulation size soccer ball (hand sewn and all weather), a pump and needle, non-toxic specialized paint pots, and 2 paint brushes.
The pump was easy to use (it’s an inexpensive plastic mini pump). My son tried at first but quickly got tired. I found with a minute of quick pump action I was able to get the ball inflated. Since the kit came with 2 brushes, my five-year-old and three-year-old worked on decorating the ball together. They each picked a section to paint. Since this is a ball, I actually had to hold it so they could paint without it rolling away. Thinking about it now, sitting it in a small bowl probably would have worked just as well.
My two youngest loved painting the different sections. They didn’t get super creative; they just painted each section different colours. My son tried painting his name but the brush tip was too big. We found using a marker worked much better. The kids loved their finish master piece. At first they were worried about using it and ruining the paint job, but that fear quickly faded. My son wants to bring his ball to his first soccer game.
I could see this being a great team activity; everyone could paint a section on the team's practice ball. Besides the soccer ball kit, there are also Design Your Own kits for football as well as baseball.
* Both the bank and the soccer ball kits were provided for the purpose of this review

My middle child loves painting. She's made some great multimedia peices with paint and collage and bits or written verse.
My youngest is a toddler and just get into this idea, he loves playing with fabric and wool scraps and is a demon with a crayon!
I was touched.
