Kids Painting Crafts from Janlynn

My kids love crafts. They love drawing and painting and creating sculptures. If it involves paint or glue or scissors or markers, they’ll be all over it. And like any proud mama, I’ve displayed many pieces of art, we’ve stored some of our favourites in an art box and have giving many as gifts to the relatives. But sometimes I feel like we’re over-run by paper crafts. I think that’s why I love crafts that produce finished objects, like some of the items available from Janlynn.

Last fall we had a chance to review some of their colouring crafts. This past March Break we tried a few of their painting crafts.

Ceramic Piggy Bank

ceramicpigThis kit included a ceramic piggy bank, 6 non-toxic paint pots, one paint brush, and a paint pot of varnish for sealing the bank when finished.

My seven-year-old loved this. The bank is pretty plain leaving the creative design totally up to the child. My daughter loved creating patterns on her pig. She used the paints offered but tried mixing colours too. And since there was no preprinted face on the bank, she could create her animal's face any way she wanted (or not have one if she so choose). My daughter plans on giving her finished bank to her best friend as a gift (they’re saving money for a trip together I’ve been told). There’s a cork stopper in the bottom of the bank so no need to crack this one open when your kids need to get at their funds.

The bank we tried was a pig but you can also get a cow bank.

Design Your Own Soccer Ball

designer-soccerballI must admit, my son isn’t big on crafts. He sometimes will create pirate treasure maps or battle plans, and we’ve recently started encouraging him to create building plans for his Lego structures. But when we pulled the Design Your Own Soccer Ball kit out, he was all over it!

The kit comes with a regulation size soccer ball (hand sewn and all weather), a pump and needle, non-toxic specialized paint pots, and 2 paint brushes.

The pump was easy to use (it’s an inexpensive plastic mini pump). My son tried at first but quickly got tired. I found with a minute of quick pump action I was able to get the ball inflated. Since the kit came with 2 brushes, my five-year-old and three-year-old worked on decorating the ball together. They each picked a section to paint. Since this is a ball, I actually had to hold it so they could paint without it rolling away. Thinking about it now, sitting it in a small bowl probably would have worked just as well.

janlynn-paintingcraftMy two youngest loved painting the different sections. They didn’t get super creative; they just painted each section different colours. My son tried painting his name but the brush tip was too big. We found using a marker worked much better. The kids loved their finish master piece. At first they were worried about using it and ruining the paint job, but that fear quickly faded. My son wants to bring his ball to his first soccer game.

I could see this being a great team activity; everyone could paint a section on the team's practice ball. Besides the soccer ball kit, there are also Design Your Own kits for football as well as baseball.

* Both the bank and the soccer ball kits were provided for the purpose of this review

As a sit here typing this comment my 7 year old son is colouring a picture of a mouse for a colouring contest. He also likes to build boats with LEGO and jewelery boxes for me out of Popsicle sticks.

Both prizes look like a lot of fun! Great review Carrie Anne.

My daughter loves to draw, and paint, and do anything that has to do with art. She has made some really neat things, including painting a bubble gum machine.

My son has just started to show interest in crafts. What I've discovered is that regular crayons don't hold as much appeal for him as vast landscapes covered in glue, sparkles, and stickers. We have a few of those now. The messier the better.

My eldest loves anything that involves glue. Wood and glue, paper and glue . . . His favourite project so far has been paper mache maracas.
My middle child loves painting. She's made some great multimedia peices with paint and collage and bits or written verse.
My youngest is a toddler and just get into this idea, he loves playing with fabric and wool scraps and is a demon with a crayon!

Thanks for the review. I had wondered before how the ball would turn out - glad it worked so well. My boys tend to get into everything. Right now, they are doing sculpture. My youngest made a 3-D piece with paper strips twisting and turning, stapled to a cardboard base. My oldest welded metal scraps and made a bird house sculpture for our garden.

I know it's a bit old school but I still love the traditional ceramic handprint things. They never get old! My two older children have made me them in school and I'm sure my baby will once he goes.

My son loves to paint and colour with markers. He also likes to carve things out of cardboard boxes (he uses a plastic pumpkin carver to be safe).

My son loves to colour but his fav thing right now is making popsicle stick lizards. He's make them in every colour imaginable and you can't go anywhere in our house without finding one.

My 5 year old son likes to build things. A few days ago, I woke up, and he used a bunch of wooden sticks to build some "modern art" sculptures for me, and cut out construction paper hearts and wrote Mommy on each one and placed it on top of his creations for me.
I was touched.

My son loves construction paper pictures. We cut shapes from different colors of construction paper and then paste them onto another peice of construction paper to make a picture. We have great fun!

We are all about the glue and scissors at this house. If my daughter can cut it and glue it, that is what counts. She is not so much about the finished products as the process.

My kids had fun making these sun catchers they got to pick what ever colours they wanted to use, and the end products were really great because they made them. I love getting my kids to do crafts, it keeps them busy, and uses their energy in a creative way:D
