Simple Steps Toward a Healthier Earth: Activity Book for Kids

Taking care of the environment is important to everyone. Like most families we try to do our part: recycle, litterless lunches, turning off lights in the room when we're done. Sometimes issues like global warming and the environment can seem like really big issues to little people, but change can be affected by both adults and kids alike.

simplestepsBkTo help my kids understand the issue and what they can do, Crystal from Raincoast Books sent along a copy of Simple Steps Toward a Healthier Earth from Chronicle Books. This isn't your typical book about the environment; it's more like an interactive workbook for kids: using ice cubes kids learn how the melting ice caps are actually speeding up global warming, searching an illustrated city scene kids circle anything they think is polluting the environment. There are riddles, puzzles, creative exercises and more to entertain and educate kids on what we do and don't do and how that affects the environment.

My seven-year-old loved working on the pages. Simple Steps covers energy and climate, water and oceans, land and animals, health and food, plus waste and recycling. We've been following the book from front to back but you could go to any page that is of interest to you or your child; there is no required order.

simplestepsBk-insideThe illustrations are fun and varied throughout the book. This was a great book for us to sit as a family and work on together. There examples in the book help illustrate to kids a seemingly uncomprehensible problem.

The best thing about Simple Steps is that it shows that even kids, doing the smallest things, can make a difference. On the page 'What A Waste' we went through a diagram of a house talking about where energy was being wasted, what rooms use the most or least energy and energy vampires (something plugged in that isn't being used but is still sucking energy, like a phone charger). Now my son runs around the house looking for Energy Vampires and calling us on it.

Some activities use stickers that are located at the back of the book, like creating an Ocean Food Web. There's also an answer key at the back of the book to check your answers.

My kids loved going through Simple Steps Toward a Healthier Earth, especially my seven-year-old. Even after we did our family time she would take the book on her own and go through additional pages.

We have a 'no lights on' policy during the day. We open all the blinds in the morning and don't use electric lights until dusk.

We have a good recycling "program" in the house and our son (6 years old) has learned to follow it. Now if he ever sees us putting some recycling item in the garbage by mistake he promptly says: "No, Mama (or Dada) that is recycle!" :-)

As a family when we go hiking we take our own water bottles filled with our Brita filled water from the tap. We do not buy water in plastic bottles.

We have a composter and put all our kitchen waste in it. Then we add it to our garden once it's turned back to soil.

We use microfibre cloths to clean the house, so we are no longer using paper towels and cleaning products. The cloths do an amazing job! Saving time, money, our health and the enviroment.

We recycle, we've have our heaters on timers during the winter so the heaters are not in use while we're out and we use reusable bags for all our shopping.
