Shut Up and Eat Book Review

Did you make something good for a change?
There’s a vein in my chicken!

No, these aren’t quotes from my family, but they could be. Feeding my family is one of those tasks that seemed to fall on me when I became a mom. It’s not a task I’m good at or really enjoy.

ShutUp_coverWell not to worry ladies. Kathy Buckworth confirms in her latest book Shut Up and Eat! Tales of Chicken, Children and Chardonnay, there are other moms dealing with the same frustrating and often-thankless job of feeding their families too. And like the saying ‘misery loves company’, I take some comfort in knowing that.

In Shut Up and Eat, Kathy, using examples from her own brave family, talks about keeping breakfast simple, the obsession we have with snacks, and how meatloaf won’t turn dinnertime into a meal with the Cleaver family.

Beyond the insanity of feeding your family, Kathy delves into the crazy world of dinner and birthday parties, the inevitable feeding of the in-laws and other guests, plus dining out and the not always convenient conveniences.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Kathy Buckworth and she is a very funny and engaging in person. Reading Shut Up and Eat is almost like sitting down and having a conversation with a friend (with the exception that none of my friends are as funny as she is). Even the recipes included in the book, ones that seem to have passed her family’s scrutiny test, are funny to read.

I often found myself laughing out-loud or nodding my head in knowing understanding as I read through the book. I especially loved the quotes at the start of each chapter; one famous quote and one counter quote from Kathy Buckworth on how insane or outdated the famous quote is. I don’t usually give myself time to read but Shut Up and Eat was a fun, cheeky read that I thoroughly enjoyed. And hey, if some of Kathy’s recipes worked with her kids, they might just work with mine too

The kids will eat anything with rice, all different types and varieties of rice. If it is mixed with rice - they will eat.

My family likes to keep me on my toes when it comes to food (including my husband). I think it's safe to say that the only thing I know they'll eat at dinner is the dessert...assuming it's chocolate.

Pasta. Can never go wrong with pasta, or "noo noos" (toddler slang for noodles).

As my kids grew up we made one meal only, if they did not eat there was no desert. This weeded out any whining about food and only things that they truly did not like didn't get eaten. My kids are now wonderful eaters that are always willing to try new things. As for what I know everyone would like, generally pasta.

Pizza. But the kids only like the crust if it's my lumpy, undercooked homemade crust. Go figure.

PASTA! Anything with noodles, really, but basic pasta with tomato sauce is always good. It's also one of the dishes I can sneak veggies into without a problem!
