Open Me Up: Everything You Need to Know About the Human Body

Why is my pee yellow?
How come I have a scab on my cut?
When will my cold go away?

openmeupAs a parent I expect to get questions from my kids. Some I can answer but others are too difficult for me to explain without causing confusion or worse, more questions.

Well if your kids are asking questions about their bodies then DK might have just the book you need. Open Me Up: Everything You Need to Know About the Human Body is a amazing reference book. Open Me Up covers all sorts of topics your kids will have questions on. That's great, but the really fantastic part of this book is how it answers these questions.

Open Me Up doesn't bog you down with technical jargon or large unpronounceable scientific words found in an encyclopedia (or high school science class). Instead it provides the information using unique scenarios or examples. Kids want to know how your body makes urine? Read about the urine-o-matic 5000 and the special brew being made inside your body. Need to explain why a body needs energy? Maybe the Body Fuel Game, Objective: Stay Alive will help.

openmeupinsideThe combination of illustrations and photography as well as various fonts and styles keeps the book lively. The design adds to the information versus distracting from it. The information is provided in little chunks, focusing on the key elements and making it easy to understand. Kids get the facts but in an entertaining way. And if they're entertained you know they're actually retaining the information too.

Open Me Up is a great reference book for any family. My kids love hearing how their bodies function and they are completely engrossed in the visuals presented. They love to share their new found knowledge in the school yard too. At least I know that this knowledge is based on fact versus fiction.

Although this book may be aimed at youth with it's snippets of information and highly visual pages, I found myself drawn into it. At least I know when the topic of sweating, breathing or blood transfusions come up I'll be prepared.
