The Fun of a Cardboard Box

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

A few weeks ago, Daddy cut some windows and a doorway in an empty pampers box, and presented it to Lil as a new little house. Stroke of genius! We figured it was good for a bit of fun that day, but the luster has not worn off by any means. She still plays with it often, and sometimes for extended periods of time. The primary residents thus far appear to be two separate families using the home as a bit of a timeshare. Its either the baby dolls and her plastic doggy, or Mickey and Minnie and Goofy. She has also been using it as a base when playing with her blocks; transforming the single family home into elaborate condo complexes.

The other day when Lil was in a foul mood (teething, again?!) I tried lots of distractions to cheer her up. She wasn’t having any of it until I suggested she paint her house, and her face just lit right up. It really saved the afternoon. So I’m pretty happy with how much we’ve all managed to get out of a plain old empty box. Here she is, just getting started:

As you can see, the empty plastic container that previously contained the array of hummus we served at a recent BBQ was really worth saving. It is an absolutely ideal painting palette, complete with a lid to salvage the unused paint when she’s finished. I love to find fun useful ways to reuse these kinds of items.

When she was finished, she ran around the yard saying “blue-y hands! blue-y hands!” A friend of ours joked: looks like she took care of that pesky smurf problem.

One Small Step in Potty Training

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Typically, Miss Thing likes to play in the bathtub long after the water has gone down the drain. And during this time when she has to go pee pee, she just goes right ahead and does it. Usually with an accompanying “uh oh!” during or after. I’ve been gently telling her that its ok but next time she can try to let me know first and she can pee pee in the potty instead of in the tub.

Today, during her post-bath play time, she actually stood up and said “pee pee, potty?” I brought her out, quickly dried her off a bit and let her sit down. We read a couple favorite books from her ‘bathroom bag’ and to my surprise she quickly stood up, turned around and proudly proclaimed, “pee pee!”

And there it was. She watched me pour it into the big toilet and flush it bye bye (no potty time is complete for her without that final ritual) and she wanted right back in the tub to continue playing.

I was so proud of her! We’re not pressuring her at all toward potty training, but we’ve had a potty for months now, available for her use. We got it when she was around 18 months (she’s 23m now). She was excited to go shopping for it and bring it home; she went pee pee in it that very day. Since then she’s used it many times here and there, both for #1 and #2 but always on her terms. She has come to enjoy the potty as a special reading chair, which is great. Often she says she has to go, merely to enjoy the intimate reading experience we have while she’s sitting there. Usually when the potty has been used for its intended purpose it was due to good timing on my part, but there have been a few times she’s asked to go when she had to go.

Each time she consciously asks in advance to go use the potty I see it as a victory. ;) And she has NEVER asked to get out of the tub to go pee, not till today. I was pretty psyched!

I take so many photos of my family that its bordering on manic, but this one put a smile on many people’s faces today.    My little one and her best friend, aka “Marley-face, the best dog ever!” as she likes to say.
