More Fun Thrift Finds

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

We thrift. A lot. This is one of what might become many continuations of my original ‘We Love our Thrift Finds‘ post.

I recently visited my home city of Chicago, and stopped by many of my former haunts. When I found myself in Roscoe Village I couldn’t help but stop in Village Discount Outlet, an enormous thrift store I frequented years ago. The place is massive, chaotic, dirt cheap and bursting at the seams with finds.

I’ve been there a hundred times, but only now had reason to visit the children’s section. As usual there were plenty of diamonds in the rough, some for as low as 60 cents. Ha! I had to stop myself at some point, because there was only so much room in my suitcase.

Here Lil models a favorite new skirt, from an old Children’s Place line. There are lovely patchwork & embroidered flowers on the front, sides and back. She loves the details and was all twirly at the children’s concert in the park that day. I think this one was 60 cents. Viva la Thrift.

We also love this comfy blue sundress, which was reborn from a small ladies’ tube top I found at Goodwill. Our thick 2yr old is already in 3-4T clothing, so the shirt fit her as a long dress easily. I removed the blue straps meant to tie at the back of a woman’s waist, and refastened them as shoulder straps.

My toddler is fully on board with my love of thrift shopping.

Those who know me know that thrifting is a long time guilty pleasure of mine. I love finding those unique gems on the rack amidst all the crap. its like a treasure hunt and I dare say I’m good at it. So I guess it was fairly unavoidable for me to carry this over to shopping for my Lil girl, from toys to gear to (especially) clothes. Since she grows out of things so rapidly and constantly gets so dirty, thrifting makes more sense now than ever. I love to have a wardrobe full of fun stuff for her to wear, and I certainly love spending next to nothing.

Kids consignment sales, freecycle, craigslist, trading with other moms and a myriad of thrift stores have all been sources of great gems for us. She enjoys the adventure of accompanying me on these endeavors. A few weeks ago, while I was revelling in the victorious discovery of ideal gently-used sandals that were just her size, the gal was frolicking with a brand new friend. A bigger kid of course, a boy around 5. I had overheard her encountering him near the drapery, my heart filling with pride as she used her polite introduction talk.

“Hi, I’m Lilah. What’s your name? Nice to meet you. Play with me?”
Not bad for a brand new 2yr old. She is so friendly and articulate, when she wants to be.

Before long they were ‘building a city’ using tiki coasters and marble chess pieces. At least, that was what she kept proudly proclaiming over and over while they stacked and arranged and spread things out. Then they took turns spinning eachother in a swivel chair. And just as I was discovering the most awesome and colorful little cabinet for her bedroom bookshelves ever, the buddies were playing ‘basketball’ by tossing a styrofoam bird head into the basin of a mint green vintage toilet.

you can’t get experiences like these just anywhere.

Over a month ago, we happened to find ourselves at the Goodwill in Eagle Rock at the beginning of a lucky special: all childrens clothes were $1. It was Monday morning and nothing had been picked over. We got an insane amount of stuff that day including an ungodly amount of unique, well-made dresses I haven’t even delved into yet. A bounty so cheap it almost felt illegal.

Today ended up being one of those days the gal wanted to twirl in a dress throughout the house like a crazy person. I found this one in the stash at the back of the closet and she was psyched at the idea of trying it on. The sunglasses were by request also. Every once in awhile she can be quite a diva.

Sure she seems rather overdressed for the occasion. If you can call a day of the typical chaos, dirt and grime of toddlerhood an occasion. But for $1, who cares! She started dramatically singing at the top of her lungs immediately after this shot.

Another $5 Sale at Threadless Kids

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

It was just brought to my attention that Threadless and Threadless Kids are having another $5 sale. The people who started this company are our friends, and they are awesome. They’ve got a lot of fun stuff for ‘grown-ups’ but their kids site is a gold mine for fun original tees you won’t see on all the other kids at school, and even onesies. I like including these in shower and birthday gifts, but I wait till they have these $5 sales because, you can’t beat that deal.

Here is my girl, modeling a few things she’s accumulated from them…

My little one has 4 baby birthdays to attend this month, plus she’s been growing out of stuff like crazy. So this is pretty well-timed for me. :) :D

The Fun of a Cardboard Box

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

A few weeks ago, Daddy cut some windows and a doorway in an empty pampers box, and presented it to Lil as a new little house. Stroke of genius! We figured it was good for a bit of fun that day, but the luster has not worn off by any means. She still plays with it often, and sometimes for extended periods of time. The primary residents thus far appear to be two separate families using the home as a bit of a timeshare. Its either the baby dolls and her plastic doggy, or Mickey and Minnie and Goofy. She has also been using it as a base when playing with her blocks; transforming the single family home into elaborate condo complexes.

The other day when Lil was in a foul mood (teething, again?!) I tried lots of distractions to cheer her up. She wasn’t having any of it until I suggested she paint her house, and her face just lit right up. It really saved the afternoon. So I’m pretty happy with how much we’ve all managed to get out of a plain old empty box. Here she is, just getting started:

As you can see, the empty plastic container that previously contained the array of hummus we served at a recent BBQ was really worth saving. It is an absolutely ideal painting palette, complete with a lid to salvage the unused paint when she’s finished. I love to find fun useful ways to reuse these kinds of items.

When she was finished, she ran around the yard saying “blue-y hands! blue-y hands!” A friend of ours joked: looks like she took care of that pesky smurf problem.
