I love older homes. Our first home was built in 1926 and our current home, 1909. I love the double-brick exterior, the wood floors and high baseboards, the pantries and maid staircase (our current home had one). But there are a few things older homes have that I’m not a fan of, like asbestos, knob and tube wiring, one bathroom (which we recently rectified in our current home) and lack of storage space.
With three kids you’re bound to have a lot of stuff. We were able to convert half of our family room on the third floor into a playroom. The new set-up and storage makes it so easy to keep the clutter and mess under control. When winter arrived it was obvious we needed to do something about our coat storage. It turns out the answer to our storage problem was in front of us all along, or rather underneath us.
We found a great unused space under our front hall stairs, after we removed a wall of course. Some drywall, lighting, and extra kitchen flooring, we were able to convert the space into a storage area for the kids jackets and books (some Ikea storage boxes helped too).
The space is just the right size for the kids, which they love. But the best part, besides the extra storage: the kids can get their own outdoor gear AND put it away themselves.
