End of School Movie Fun: Diary of a Wimpy Kid and RIO

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Ah school. There’s nothing quite like it. And soon it will be over in our house. Sure we have summer camps planned but we also have a lot of free time in our schedule too. summer_movie_diary_wimpy_kid_rodrickWe can all do with a little sleeping in, no more school lunches and hanging out doing nothing.

Why not start things off with an end of summer playdate. Have your kids invite a few friends over and chillax with a fun movie. (You know summer must be coming; I just used the work chillax in my post).

20th Century Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules comes out on DVD and Blu-ray June 21, just in time for summer vacation. My daughter has read all of the books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and she loved the movie treatment of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. I see it as a peek into what could lie ahead for us in middle school and sibling relationships.

Visit the site www.wimpypartypooper.com for some online fun tied to the movie. Complete all 3 levels of the game and be rewarded with one fun activity sheet. I believe there are 3 different sheets you can get. Each sheet includes a recipe, like Rodrick’s Quencher or Eat Dirt, plus you’ll get an activity or craft. These sheets could come in handy when you kids utter those dastardly summer vacation words: I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.summer_movie_rio

For the younger set 20th Century Fox is releasing RIO on Blu-ray August 1. Along with the movie, the disc promises to be full of fun interactive features, including an exclusive bonus level of Angry Birds Rio.

Both the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and RIO come packed with a digital and DVD copy within the Blu-ray combo packs so you’ll have some movie entertainment for the ride to the cottage or grandma’s house this summer.

Bring it on summer vacation!

Christmas Carol train tour

Friday, September 11th, 2009

For the labour day weekend we went to visit friends of ours in Michigan and stumbled upon Disney’s A Christmas Carol Train Tour. You may have heard about the new Jim Carry movie A Christmas Carol expected out in theatres in November. To help promote the movie they’re crossing the country on a train tour. We discovered it at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The tour still has more stops, though they’re now into the west coast part of the tour.

We were able to see some great behind the scene footage, plus costumes and some of Charles Dickins’ original manuscripts on loan from the Charles Dickens Museum in London, England. You could also morph your face into one of four characters from the movie. We’re suppose to get an email when the pictures are ready so we can download them (still waiting for the email for our crazy faces). Then we given a sneak peek of the actual movie.

I didn’t realize the movie was in 3D. I’ve never been too impressed by many movies done in 3D (though I haven’t seen many) but this was actual quiet good.

You can check out the Christmas Carol movie trailer

The whole train tour is free, but if you do plan to drop by be sure to get there early. We arrived in the morning and had an hour wait in line. It didn’t seem that long though because of the water stops and carolers and movie preview clips along the line. They even had snow and tattoos and punchout ornaments for the kids to take home.

Meatballs inspired by the movies

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Not too long ago I sent a tweet out looking for a good meatball recipe. And within fifteen minutes I had five responses, from recipes to tips to links. One of the many reasons why I love twitter.

You see, I had watched the movie Hancock (with Will Smith and Charlize Theron). The movie was okay, not quite what I expected, but it did inspire me to make meatballs and spaghetti. Homemade meatballs. Great big, ‘only one can fit on your plate’ meatballs. See, in the movie Mary (Charlize Theron) has spaghetti and meatball night every Wednesday at her house. Her son loved it and looked forward to this night each week. I loved the idea of making homemade meatballs, but I’m not a great cook so I turned to others for help. That’s when Rebecca from A little bit of Momsense tweeted a link to her recipe on her blog. It looked easy enough (I made a few modifications like using medium ground and some cheese). And it was easy. Surprisingly easy. The best part was my kids loved them too. Finally watching TV has paid off in something good for me and my family.

Have you ever been inspired to try something after watching a TV show or movie?
