Experimentation: Straws

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

In an earlier Everything Fabulous article on EverythingMom, we suggested some fun tools to make school lunches fun. The Constructable Strawz were one of the fun products we highlighted. So one soggy Saturday afternoon we turned family snack time into a little experiment. All three of my kids loved making crazy straws out of the various straw and connector pieces included. We did air tests to see if the air you blew in on one end came out on the other. My oldest even tried blowing up a plastic bag using her straw creation.

Then it was time for the real test.

Time to add liquid into the mix.

Before using their straws, the kids made a few predictions: if their straw would work, if there would be any leaks, what straw would get liquid to the end the fastest. Then they each tried drinking their milk. It was great to see their creations actually working (some more easier than others). We did have to make some alterations to my youngest daughter’s straw as its design kept knocking her milk glass over.

It wasn’t a big deal, putting the straws together for lunch, but the kids really enjoyed themselves and discovering through trial and error what worked and what didn’t and how they would change their straws next time.

Have chess board, will travel

Have chess board, will travel

Due to the weather the kids at school has an indoor day last week. To keep the kids occupied and stop them from bouncing off the walls one of the teachers introduced my daughter’s class to the game of chess. She fell in love. For the next few days dinner conversation consisted of different moves you can make with the chess pieces, what the chess pieces are called, how much fun it is to play chess, so on and so on.

When she found out the school has a chess club she just had to belong. And to belong meant she had to practice. And of course in order to practice she needed her own chess board. So her dad bought her a chess board on the weekend. Actually he bought it for the whole family but my daughter has become the keeper. So now in the morning she plays chess, after homework she plays chess, they practice at school on Wednesday and of course she has to bring HER chess board to school (like carrying a backpack and lunch bag isn’t enough of a struggle). My daughter is so obsessed with chess she tries to play a game with her three-year old sister, who just wants to make the pieces dance.

I guess I need to learn so my daughter has someone she can actually play and practice with. No any good chess books for beginners?

I love a good learning game

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I love games, but I love them even more when my kids are learning without knowing they’re learning. We’ve been very fortunate to have been given access to some very cool learning games.

thinkfunlogoFirst we played with ThinkFun’s great logic game Rush Hour Jr (based on the popular Rush Hour game, but designed for kids 6 to 8). Checkout the review (and giveaway) in the Everything Mom review section.

PhotobucketSecondly my two oldest have been practicing letter recognition and order, math problems and basic skills such as following instructions, all on Adventure Island. Escape from Adventure Island is JumpStart’s newest venture in educational gaming on the Wii. Checkout the review, including video clips on what my kids think of the game.

And there’s more great game reviews to come on Everything Mom so stay tuned.

Nature Centre: For the Birds

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I know I’ve talked about wanting to get out of the city, but there are a few good reasons for wanting to stay too. Recently my oldest daughter and I just hopped on the streetcar to visit the Word on the Street book and magazine festival.

Another great reason is the Nature Centre, located in High Park. It’s just a short walk away from our house and they offer amazing educational programs and workshops for families, kids and schools. I signed up my two youngest to attend their Tuesday morning Kneehigh Naturalist program and today was our first day.

The program usually starts off with a craft based on the day’s theme. Today the kids made Bluejay birds.

So can you guess what today’s theme was? Bluejays. After a discussion about Fall and the park and a counting story on birds, the kids had a snack and then it was hike time, my kids favourite part of the morning. Today we were on a scavenger hunt for a Bluejay party: oak leaves, acorns, ants and crickets.

Did you know:

  • A group of ten or twelve or more Bluejays is called a party
  • Bluejays can fly holding seven acorns in their throat
  • For a bath, Bluejays use ants. They place them on their features to eat smaller bugs.

A kids program where even I learn a thing or two has to be pretty amazing.
