Have chess board, will travel

Have chess board, will travel

Due to the weather the kids at school has an indoor day last week. To keep the kids occupied and stop them from bouncing off the walls one of the teachers introduced my daughter’s class to the game of chess. She fell in love. For the next few days dinner conversation consisted of different moves you can make with the chess pieces, what the chess pieces are called, how much fun it is to play chess, so on and so on.

When she found out the school has a chess club she just had to belong. And to belong meant she had to practice. And of course in order to practice she needed her own chess board. So her dad bought her a chess board on the weekend. Actually he bought it for the whole family but my daughter has become the keeper. So now in the morning she plays chess, after homework she plays chess, they practice at school on Wednesday and of course she has to bring HER chess board to school (like carrying a backpack and lunch bag isn’t enough of a struggle). My daughter is so obsessed with chess she tries to play a game with her three-year old sister, who just wants to make the pieces dance.

I guess I need to learn so my daughter has someone she can actually play and practice with. No any good chess books for beginners?

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Hotdog!

Can I have a side order of cheeky chips with that.

Can I have a side order of cheeky chips with that.

My son’s favourite expression, actually his favourite word lately has been Hotdog. Everyone and everything is a hotdog. He’s in a hotdog mood. He’s looking forward to playing with hotdog at school today. It’s endless. So when we visited the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan not too long ago, I couldn’t believe the display they had.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Viking Girl

Look out, it's Viking Girl

Look out, it's Viking Girl

On our recent trip to Disney World we spent one day in Epcot, touring the world. The first country on our visit was Norway. And when in Norway there’s nothing more fun than being a Viking. (funny, my youngest is getting so big, she’ll be 3 this December, but somehow in this picture she looks like my little baby still. Must be that large troll creature behind her).

Almost Wordless Wednesday: 52 Pick-Up

What do you mean I have to clean it up?

What do you mean I have to clean it up?

My youngest daughter has just learned a new card game: 52 pick-up. Lots of fun to set-up, but not so much fun to clean up (thus her not so happy expression)

Almost Wordless Wednesday: In front of the camera

Is that really me? In a picture?

Is that really me? In a picture?

When you’re the family photographer, it’s a real treat (and surprise) to find a picture of yourself in front of the camera. And yes, this isn’t the best shot since my son seems to be the only happy one and the only one looking at the camera, but when there’s only a handful of shots with me in them, I find I’m not that picky.

Are you the family photographer?

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Nightlight

A comforting glow in the dead of night

A comforting glow in the dead of night

My daughter has a new night light in her room, blue fiber optics. In her dark room, with her fan on, the wires wave around giving the sense of little fire flies floating in her room. My daughter feels like she’s sleeping outside.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: City meets Country

Hello Mr Toad

Hello Mr Toad

We live in the city. My three kids are born and bred city kids. So when we take a trip to my sister’s house in the country it’s always a treat. On our recent trip to my sister’s to celebrate Simcoe Day, my youngest found a toad sitting on my sister’s front porch. My daughter spent the next forty-five minutes watching and talking to her new friend Toad. She wouldn’t do that for television.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Jumping on the Bed

Higher and higher

Higher and higher

One of the great joys of staying in a hotel is jumping on the bed (something the kids aren’t allowed to do at home). Have fun!

Wordless Wednesday: Making Breakfast

Starting the day right

Starting the day right

This week my oldest daughter attends a week of camp at our local Nature Centre. She’s so excited she’s the first one up and has taken it upon herself to make breakfast for everyone else.

Wordless Wednesday: A New Ritual

Reading together

Reading together

Bedtime stories use to be read by me to the kids. But now that my oldest has developed a new found love of reading, she has started to take over (well, maybe just add to) our nightly reading ritual. You can see my review of A Wizard in Love (the book my daughter’s is reading)
