Family Movie Time: Orville Redenbacher and RIO

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

We don’t have cable at home but that doesn’t stop us from watching TV or rather movies on our TV. Instead of television nights we have movie nights, usually Friday or Saturday nights, and no movie is complete in our house without popcorn, specifically Orville Rendenbacher popcorn.

So what a treat when the folks at Orville Redenbacher hosted an afternoon movie screening of 20th Century Fox’s movie Rio (released on DVD the beginning of August). My kids even forgo attending camp that day so we could all catch the movie together and my 9-year old even broke out her popcorn hat from Disney for the occasion. To enjoy the movie the folks at Orville Rednbacher popped up some fresh popcorn at the complimentary popcorn station, along with an assortment of fun toppings (like chocolate chips, skittles and gummi bears) and seasonings (such as salt and vinegar, cinnamon and chipotle chili - my daughter inadvertently mixed up those two flavours, ending up with a spicy surprise). The popcorn bar was open through the whole movie so guests could come up at any time to help themselves. I was surprised my 9-year old, who’s a bit of a popcorn addict, only went up once but I think she helped her 4-year old sister finish hers).

Then we settled in for the movie. None of us had seen RIO before and it was fun. Even I enjoyed the film. Actually watching RIO stirred a desire in me to visit RIO. Everyone in the theater seemed to enjoy the film, with it’s fun songs that made you want to dance and a few laugh out loud moments (at least on a kid level).

popcorn_movie

After the movie the kids were surprised with goodie bags containing items from the movie like RIO hats, tshirts, a stuffed RIO bird (or Jewel as my 4-year old wants it to be called) or stickers, some bubbles and chalk and another 20th Century Fox movie (we received Horton Hears a Who and Robots, both fun films). I loved the boxes of Orville and Redenbacher’s Lime and Salt popcorn (my second favourite flavour after their Select White flavour). Summer has been so busy so it was nice to hang out together enjoying a film thanks to the folks at Orville Redenbacher and 20th Century Fox.

Winnie the Pooh: First Movie Certificate

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Most adults remember Winnie the Pooh cartoons from when they were kids. Now many share Winnie the Pooh with their own kids on TV and through DVD movies. Winnie the Pooh has waddled on to the big screen with his friends this summer in the new movie Winnie the Pooh (July 15, 2011 release date).wiinie_pooh_movie_certificate

You may be thinking about taking your youngsters to see the movie in theaters and for many little ones, the Winnie the Pooh movie will be the first big screen movie they will experience. The folks at Walt Disney Studios know how important an occasion that is, the first movie, so they’ve created a printable First Movie Certificate (pdf) for the Winnie the Pooh movie release.

Winnie the Pooh movie synopsis from Walt Disney Studios Canada:

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh.” Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original short films, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo—and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail.  “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win, Eeyore?” asks Pooh.  Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some honey. Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, “Winnie the Pooh” hits theaters in the U.S. on July 15, 2011.

Whether you’ve already taken your tot to see the film or it is part of your summer to-do list, grab a copy of this Winnie the Pooh First Movie Certificate (pdf) to mark the occasion. One more step to being a big kid.

Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (and into Your Living Room)

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Sometimes I think I had kids so I could justify playing with the toys and reading the books and watching cartoons. phineas_ferb_across_2nd_dimension_movieI never tire of kids cartoons (well, there are a few purple dinosaurs and backpack carrying girls I could leave behind). When we were on a road trip in the US, we stumbled upon Disney’s Phineas and Ferb cartoon series. I love it. I’m sure I know all the words to the theme song.

Well Phineas and Ferb jumping into summer with an all original movie Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension.

Synopsis from the Family Channel:

Based on the popular series, Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension, follows the adventurous siblings as they discover that their beloved pet platypus, Perry, is a secret agent who regularly pits his marsupial mettle against his nemesis, Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Phineas and Ferb team up with Perry (aka Agent P) on a grand adventure through a parallel universe where they meet alternate versions of themselves and their friends and must ultimately thwart an extra evil version of Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension airs on the Family Channel, Friday, August 5 at 8 p.m. ET and August 20 on the newly launched Disney XD, plus you can catch it again on Disney XD OnDemand from August 23 and Family OnDemand from August 26.

The multi-dimensional movie also goes multi-platform as Family.ca and DisneyXD.ca launch Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension supersites. Leading up to the film the sites will be populated with new games including “The Movie Game: The Dimension of Doooom!” new activities, behind-the-scenes footage from the movie and an exclusive contest to win a 3D handheld gaming system.

And for the gaming family’s like us out there, Disney Interactive will be releasing Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension video game this August for Nintendo DS and Wii as well as the Playstation 3. Players will get to play as one of the characters in the movie while exploring wacky levels of game play. I, uh, my son can’t wait.

Celebrate Canada. Benefit Starlight Children’s Foundation

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Oh Canada!

Canada Day is almost upon us. I find most Canadians I know are subtly proud of they Canadianship but Canada Day is when we can shout loud and proud I AM CANADIAN (and that doesn’t involve drinking a beer).

This Canada Day, celebrate by: hosting a backyard BBQ with family and friends, painting a Canada flag on your face, firing off some fireworks (or try this much safer homemade firework craft idea), monopoly_canada_starlight_childrens_foundation_donationplay a Canadian game like basketball (a sport originated in Canada) or maybe a board game like Hasbro’s Monopoly Canada Edition and give seriously ill kids a chance to play.

From June 17 to July 3 (2011), Hasbro Canada will contribute one (1) Monopoly board game to Starlight Children’s Foundation, for each Monopoly Canada Edition purchased (capped at 5,000 games donated).

“We are pleased to be donating to the Starlight Children’s Foundation who are as committed as we are to making children smile” said Greg Ferguson, Senior Brand Manager of Games and Puzzles for Hasbro Canada. “These children and their families have been through so much, we are honoured to help provide them with some much needed joy and fun.”

The Monopoly: Canada Edition is available in stores across the country, in both English and French at an approximate retail price of $39.99 Cdn. For more information visit www. hasbro.ca.

It’s hard to believe that day is almost here. cars2_prizes_gamesCars 2 hits theatres June 24, a rip-raoring way to kick-off summer vacation.

It’s not just the kids out there who are looking forward to the new movie release; the folks at Walt Disney Studios Canada are just as excited and want to share the fun with everyone. They have all sorts of Cars 2 fun planned for their facebook page, from exclusive clips and photos, fun facts and prizes:

Trivia Tuesdays: Questions to test our fans CARS knowledge.
Win-it Wednesdays: A chance to win weekly CARS 2 giveaways.

You can also take the excitement of Cars 2 home with you with a collection of family-friendly boardgames from Hasbro: Monopoly, Sliders, Memory, Trouble and Operation. Revved-Up at the Hot Wheels World Record Event

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Remember that Hot Wheels World Record Attempt event I talked about? Well when my son heard about it we had to stop in. The event took place the the Evergreen Brick Works in the east end of the city (well, east for me). The parking lot was full and my 6-year old son could hardly contain himself when he saw the entrance.

hot_wheels_record_event_entrance

For a full parking lot the venue didn’t seem too crowded. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of people there but there was still plenty of room to walk around. The first place my kids went for was the Hot Wheels toy area. All 3 kids enjoyed playing with some of Hot Wheels newest toys, like the  Hot Wheels Rev Ups. These cars move with kid power and the tracks that had them driving upside down were pretty cool. One of my favourite new toys (and my kids thought it was kinda cool too) is the new Hot Wheels Wall Tracks. Using 3M’s adhesive technology, kids can now host Hot Wheel races on their walls. This is great news for me. Now my son can run tracks on open walls in his room instead of down the hallways, making an obsticle course for everyone else in the house.

hot_wheels_record_event_wall_trackshot_wheels_record_event_wall_tracks2hot_wheels_record_event_revups

The kids also had a chance to try out some Hot Wheels racing games in both simulations as well as on the computer. The kids also received a large Hot Wheels Cars of 2011 poster which outlines the newest cars to add to your collection. If you didn’t get out to the event, you can download the poster on your computer (pdf).

Of course there was food. The BBQ was going, grilling up hot dogs, hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches. The folks at PopChips were there handing out samples (BBQ is my favourite) and all the kids loved the Hot Wheels themed drink boxes.

hot_wheels_record_event_eating

But what everyone was waiting for was the big drop. You can see the video on Hot Wheels site (make sure you aren’t squeamish). Even though it’s a video, still seeing the car race down from such high heights had me weak in the knees (I’m not a height person). On May 29 as part of “IZOD Presents Hot Wheels Fearless at the 500™,” Team Hot Wheels Yellow Driver Tanner Foust successfully landed a ramp-to-ramp distance jump of 332 feet. Foust, a three-time X Games gold medalist and professional stunt driver soared an impressive 332 feet over the current world record at the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500.

All in all, the Hot Wheels was really well organized. There was something for everyone, kids and adults alike (though I did find the sound rather loud) and the venue was great. The kids walked away with a sample of the new Hot Wheels Wall Tracks and the VideoRacer (a Hot Wheels car with a built-in video camera). I’m, I mean the kids, are looking forward to trying both of these out (both of which will be available in stores June 2011). You can checkout the rest of the Hot Wheels Live tour dates on their website: www.hotwheelslive.ca

Story Buddy iPad App from Hallmark

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

If you have kids no doubt books are a part of your daily life. In our house we read books individually and as a family and no bedtime routine is complete without a story. I even review children’s literature once a week through my Write a Review Wednesday posts on my personal blog (also syndicated on EverythingMom).

Actual books are great for their size and physical feel (turning pages, lifting flaps)hallmark_interactive_storybook_ipad_app but technology can add a new experience around reading and kids. Hallmark’s Interactive Story Buddy is a lap-sized stuffed animal your kids will instantly befriend. What makes the Interactive Story Buddy extra special is his ability to interact with the story you’re reading or rather the Hallmark Interactive Storybook (either the hard copy or the iPad app). The first book comes free with your Story Buddy purchase. We received Watson the Raccoon but you can also purchase Cooper the Bear. The other nice thing about the Story Buddy is that his responses when you read the book. This makes for an ever-changing experience each time your child listens or reads the story.

You can find book 1: Watson and the Case of the Sneaky Stealer as a free download in the app store. The iPad app lets your child enjoy the story being read to her and her Story Buddy will interact with key lines being read in the story. My daughter enjoyed loved hearing Watson the Raccoon interacting along with the story she was listening too; like a friend commenting during story time together. The pages have subtle animations like rain falling or or leaves blowing to add some movement during the story and you control when to move to the next page so you’re child can take it all in at their pace.

Along with hearing the story with the default narrator, there is the option to have someone else record the audio, like dad or grandma or mom. This is a nice touch for the child to hear a story from someone who may not be around all the time. You record the story right in the app, page by page. In the settings you can choose which audio to play when your child listens to the story. This means one story can have multiple readers. Watson the Raccoon also reacts to the recorded audio but make sure the Story Buddy isn’t around when you are recording or you’ll get his reaction added recorded also. And be sure to speak loudly when recording so the Story Buddy will be able to hear the key words and react when it’s being played.

Unlike the book form, the interactive storybook also included some games: an easy 9-piece puzzle based on various pictures from the story and a search-and-find puzzle based on comparing two illustrations from the story. Just another fun way to interact with the story.

The app is only available for the iPad but that size is ideal for little fingers and it presents a nice story space too.  You can also get the iPad app for Hallmark’s Cooper the Bear Story Buddy and their Christmas themed Jingle Story Buddy.hallmark_interactive_storybook_storybuddy

When you purchase your Story Buddy, you do get the book 1 for that particular Story Buddy for free plus you can buy additional Interactive Storybooks to be read with your Story Buddy too.

I love when technology merges and converges to give you and your family an experience based on your needs. We love looking at the hard cover version of Watson and the Case of the Sneaky Stealer but the interactivity of the iPad version, such as the ability for my daughter to listen to the story on her own or to have different family members record the story for her enjoyment, is a great advantage too. And all items work with her Story Buddy. right now you can only get the original Interactive Storybook as an app. Perhaps down the road they will give you the option of buying additional books in app form.

I want to thank the folks at Hallmark for sending the Interactive Storybook and Story Buddy to us to try. We stumbled upon the iPad version and thought it was worth sharing.

Homemade Guacamole for Cinco de Mayo

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is a Mexican festival celebrated in many parts of the world and who can blame them. Margaritas, sangria, pinatas, and Mexican food, who wouldn’t want to have a party with all of these, especially Mexican food. But you don’t need to have a huge party to enjoy a little Mexico. Some days after school my kids will enjoy a snack of cut veggies and corn chips with a sour cream and guacamole dip.

As you’ve probably gathered from any of my posts, I’m not very proficient when it comes to ‘homemade’ but the folks from Avocados from Mexico sent me the ingredients and recipe to try my hand at making my own guacamole for the kids, I gave it a shot.

Surprisingly the recipe was pretty easy. Basically it was add the ingredients and stir and the ingredients are basic enough that you’ll be able to find them at your local grocery store. No specialty store shopping required. If you’re looking at hosting a Cinco de Mayo party tomorrow or just looking for a different snack to offer the kids after school, try this recipe:

Classic Guacamole
A classic guacamole recipe is a staple for any host. To mix it up, play with the heat – turn it up by adding more peppers or cut back slightly for children and guests who prefer a milder taste.

classicmexicanguacamole1 cup/250 mL diced sweet onion
1/4 cup/50 mL minced, seeded jalapeño peppers 50 mL
3 ripe avocados from Mexico, peeled, pitted and diced
1/4 cup/50 mL chopped fresh cilantro
3 tbsp/45 mL fresh lime juice
2 tsp/10 mL minced garlic
1 tsp/5 mL coarse salt
1/2 tsp/2 mL fresh cracked pepper

In medium bowl, combine onion, jalapeño peppers and avocados. Stir to combine. Add cilantro, lime juice, garlic, salt and pepper, mix thoroughly. Serve with crisp tortilla chips and extra lime wedges. Best if enjoyed within 24 hours.

Yield: Approximately 2 cups.
Tip:For extra kick, leave the seeds in the pepper.

The Wild World of Tim Burton - The TIFF Exhibition

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

This past weekend I took my daughter to the TIFF Lightbox to see the Tim Burton exhibit. The exhibit has actually been running since the end of November 2010 so I’m kind of late getting to it. Ever since it opened it was one of those things I’ve been meaning to do but just never got around to it. Then I received a Groupon notice about tickets on sale and didn’t hesitate.tim_burton_exhibit_tiff_5

I decided to take my 8-year old daughter in celebration of her impending 9th birthday in a few weeks. I’ve been a Tim Burton fan for a while and we’ve exposed our kids to a lot of his movie work, like Vincent and Corpse Bride and my ultimate favourite, The Nightmare Before Christmas. I love that movie so much that my husband surprised me with a trip on my birthday to Disneyland to see the Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion revamp (a must see attraction).

The exhibit will be at the TIFF Lightbox until April 17 but the free family exhibits with a Burton-esque theme ended this weekend and I really wanted to see that too. The nice thing about Groupon is that I could go right to the shorter Will Call line to pick-up my tickets. The not so nice thing about Groupon was I couldn’t pre-order my tickets. Since the gallery for the exhibit is small, the tickets were issues in half-hour time slots. When we arrived at 12:30 the earliest slot we could get was 2 p.m. And once you have your tickets you weren’t allowed to leave the building (which was sort of crazy).

In this situation it wasn’t a bad thing since my daughter and I wanted to checkout the family activities they had planned in the studios on the third floor. One room had a green screen, where kids could put themselves into scenes from some of their favourite movies, like Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas. Another room gave kids (and adults) a chance to create their own Tim Burton themed creatures using plaster-cine and other craft items. With creatures created, you could take them into the third studio and sit in a booth (there were about 15) and create your own stop-motion animation using your new creature. You can see some of the clips people made as part of the various drop-ins during the Tim Burton exhibit.

My daughter and I decided to make our own creatures. It was great fun, even for me, to get back into creating something with plaster-cine. And I wasn’t the only adult doing it. My daughter would have loved to do her own stop animation but we ran out of time so we’re going to make our own at home.

tim_burton_exhibit_tiff_1tim_burton_exhibit_tiff_3tim_burton_exhibit_tiff_2

Finally off to the show. The room is quite small though it says it can hold up to 300 people. The staff at the TIFF Lightbox did a great job monitoring the number of people going in and out; it never really felt crowded except at the entrance which is also the exit. I think my daughter and I did the exhibit backwards but it worked just as well tracing Tim Burton’s roots back from his blockbuster films to his earlier art. The exhibit contained finish work and sketches as well as hand written notes and some models used in his films. I was surprised the only real video show was that of Vincent (which is a great short film if you haven’t seen it). My daughter loved the sketches but I loved the notes. Reading Tim Burton’s thoughts on the Edward Scissorhands character and his thoughts on the storyline for Beetlejuice. It really was a great show and I’m glad I was able to catch it before it left. The exhibit is recommended for kids 8 and up and I think my daughter would agree with this. Tim Burton’s wild imagination and creature creations can be a little scary to little ones. Even my daughter didn’t like the severed heads from Mars Attack.

There’s still time to see the exhibit. The Tim Burton exhibition will be at the TIFF Lightbox until April 17. For more information on the exhibition visit http://tiff.net/timburton/exhibition.
