Scar-face

This past weekend, I escaped the house to meet some local bloggers*. It is such a rare experience for me to be able to get out of the house without kids, and without a set time-line for return, that I found I was almost giddy. Or maybe I was totally giddy.
Whatever…I had an awesome time.

It was good I had a great time while out and about, because when I arrived home, still high from my freedom, I was greeted by my husband who told me that K had had a “minor accident” and had a “slight bruise” on his eye. He explained that K had fallen off the step, bumped his face on the corner of his small breakfast table, proceeded to cry himself to exhaustion, and was currently taking a nap.

My husband told me all of this in his usual nonchalant, shoulder-shrug kind of stance, so I wasn’t worried. K is a highly active child and I expect a scrape or two will come his way from time-to-time. The fact that K cried himself to exhaustion also didn’t ring any alarm bells because he has lately been testing out his dramatic acting skills and regularly works himself up into a crying fit over all manner of things.
(For example, this past week he threw himself onto the rug in sobs. When questioned on what was wrong, he told me it was because “Mickey Mouse is HUGE!” I have no idea where he came up with that or why it would upset him. We are not planning a trip to Disneyland, he has never been to Disneyland, and as far as I know he hasn’t had any traumatic Mickey Mouse occurrences. Random fit, random subject.)

After changing into my mom uniform of yoga pants and a t-shirt, I went in to see K.

This is not a slight bruise

What I saw was not a “slight bruise” but a gash actively leaking pus, and a very swollen eye. He looked terrible and this started a semi-heated conversation between my husband and myself about if K should of been taken to the emergency room.
My husband thought not and since hours had passed by the time I saw K, I reluctantly agreed that too much time had passed for stitches. We decided to clean his eye and used steri-strips to close the wound.
After much crying, and hugging, and crying (K is not a fan of alcohol swabs), he started to perk up and act his normal exuberant self.
Keeping him from throwing himself face-first onto the couch has been the trickiest part over the past couple of days. His wound seems to be healing slowly and I just hope he isn’t left with a big scar under his eye.
I feel tempted to ask who would of taken their kid to the ER but that seems to be a bit nasty of me. So here I am not asking that.
Instead check out the *list of who I met this weekend, not including adorable children and lovely husbands, in alphabetical order:
