Argue, Rinse, Repeat.

My husband and I have been married for twelve and a half years. I think it’s fair to say that I know him pretty well and I can tell if I can win a battle or if I’m just going to be rehashing one of the same arguments that we’ve had ad nauseum for over a dozen years.

We have at least a dozen repeat-until-infinity arguments. These are topics that we just can’t agree on and likely never will. Hubby would likely be happy to forget about them, but I can’t, and won’t, because I’m obsessive like that. I like to win. And really, I am TOTALLY right about these issues so he should just agree with me and give it up.

I call these arguments. Hubby calls them discussions.

He would prefer to say that we never fight. Apparently only I fight. In a way he’s right.

I get heated and discuss things, sometimes loudly, sometimes with hands on my hips, or arms waving in exasperation, while he stands there and says little or nothing. His eyes glaze and I know he’s tuned me out but I am just so desperate for him to finally hear the reason after all these years that I keep on going. Eventually, I run out of steam, or rational points to make, or breath, and I will stop speaking and glare pointedly at him. He will either say something irritating like “Fine, have it your way” (when I know he doesn’t really mean it), or he will say something even more irritating like “No, you’re wrong”.

I will usually leave the room in a huff to sit in the only room that can still offer a little privacy - the bathroom - until I calm down and continue on about my day.

In the end I will either do what I want or not. We will either agree on it or not. And life will continue on until we hit the point that one of us (aka me) feels that we must re-hash the same topic for the one hundred millionth time.

It’s tiring, frustrating, and comfortable. It’s known. It’s expected. It’s our cycle of life marriage.
