Thanks for writing this--such an important topic, as research increasingly shows. One of the key factors contributin gto sleep deprivation in teens are the absurdly early school hours in the US--which can be traced back a few decades to efforts to save money on school bus runs. We now know that asking teens to be up and out for school before sunrise is seriously cutting into their sleep (they'd have to be asleep by 9 pm to get the requisite 8.5-9.25 hours), and contributing to serious health & safety problems. Yet politics, money, & myth generally keep local schools from moving start times. That's why I started an online petition pushing for a minimum earliest start time for schools, which now has over 1000 signatures ( http://bit.ly/tWa4dS ). It would be great if you'd help spread the word about this initiative, which would make it easier for local schools to set school hours in the best interest of health, safety, education, and equity.
