Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock of the many blessings stowed upon you: your kids are happy and healthy, your cupboards are stocked with food, and your home is a welcoming environment. You are blessed. Some things, like having a home to call your own, are a luxury other families can never hope to achieve. Habitat for Humanity Canada (HFHC) is working to change that – and your kids can help.
In partnership with Genworth Financial Canada, Habitat for Humanity Canada is celebrating its fifth year of their Meaning of Home writing competition. From October 3 until November 14, 2011, grade 4, 5 and 6 students across Canada are encouraged to share what they feel home means to them. Is it the house they sleep in, their own family, or maybe the community they live in? Home can mean so many things.
By sharing a simple 50 to 300 word essay or poem describing what home means to them, students can help a family in their community achieve the dream of owning their own home. Genworth Financial Canada will make a $60,000 Cdn contribution to Habitat for Humanity Canada towards the building of a Habitat home in or near the winner’s community. The student with the winning submission will also receive their own iPad 2, plus a pizza party for their entire school. There are many other prizes to be won (click here for details).
New this year is the direct impact each child can make with their entry as Genworth Financial Canada will donate $5 Cdn to a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate for each entry submitted. Everyone walks away a winner knowing they’ve helped someone. The more essays submitted, the more donations will go to Habitat, so tell a friend!
