9 Weeks Pregnant: Weight Gain During Pregnancy

9 Weeks Pregnant: Weight Gain During PregnancyYour growing baby is an inch long and weighs about 3 grams. How much is 3 grams? It’s about one-tenth of an ounce. How much is one-tenth of an ounce? It’s about one-tenth of a shot of vodka you won’t be coming anywhere near for a very long time. Baby has a developed upper lip now and her nose and mouth are more easily distinguished than before. Much of her length is taken up by her adorable little head, which is still proportionately large for the size of her tiny body. Baby already has eyelids, which she firmly keeps shut until about 27 weeks gestation. This week your little baby starts building the ovaries or testes that will one day grow your grandchildren. Not to worry... there’s still plenty of time to plan out that “birds and bees” talk you’re already dreading.

You are probably starting to grow a bit too, if you haven’t already. Weight gain should be occurring and now is a good time to begin recording your weight regularly if your health care provider isn’t regularly weighing you in. This is probably the one time in your life where you won’t mind seeing the needle creep up on the scale, but remember that there are guidelines for pregnancy weight gain. Women of healthy pre-pregnancy weight should gain around 25 to 35 pounds. Women who carry a bit of extra weight can stand to keep pregnancy weight gain between 15 and 25 pounds to avoid complications. Women with low pre-pregnancy weight can avoid complications by gaining about 28 to 40 pounds. Good luck being exact with these numbers. An extra pound of Doritos on your hips won’t kill you but, you know... everything in moderation. Throw a few grapes in between bags of Doritos.
